Re: TRAILER and BOAT LEGALITY ISSUES?

In Michigan the trailer plate is non-transferrable. Once you sell your trailer the plate is junk. The weight category is somewhere over 2450#'s. My boat trailer was $75.00, my camper (2470#'s) was also $75.00. Heavier trailers are $200.00. I was told that commercial trailers (semi's) were plated at a different rate too, but i don't know for sure. Teh brilliance of the permanent plate was explained ot me by an SOS staffer. Seems people would buy the plate and pay the first years registration, but then just not renew. The cops rarely looked at trailers, so they would get away without renewing. But, the permanent plate was more expensive and the state figured they'd make up the difference as people sold their trailers and bought new ones. I know my camper plate was <1/3 the permanent plate fee.
And djvan, you are right about the titling. My 18.5' SeaRay Seville has a title, and an I/O. With a 140 hp Merc I-4. Seems liek a good unit, and I wouldn't think being a GM 4-cyl that repairs would be overly expensive. Heck, i put a set of lifters in a friends 3.0 Mercruiser and he bought the lifters from NAPA for the application for $30.00 for all eight lifters. And the side cover gasket was pretty reasonable too.

David is right about the weight category the cut off is 2500 lbs, not 1500. Most people I know are intending to use their new permanent plate as a multi use plate. Two of my three purchased permanents are for assembled trailers (homebuilt no id numbers), so this makes these plates pretty universal fo a trailer of similar weight.

DougV>

Who's name is the title in? You don't want the boat title to be in your uncles name.
