It's tabbed washers for sure, similar to a Jeep cj...I hope to pick up the new kits tommorrow...now on to everything else between 2 boats and 2 Jeeps...maybe one day I could be satisfied with a tiny little gas sipping car and just reading all day when I'm off........ah well.

If you spindles are not scored or have any blueing to them they should be okay. I agree with everyone else replace everything. I would leave boating shops alone with trailer parts. Go to a auto parts store...not a autozone or o'reilys...go to a local parts house with knowledgable people. Get good quality bearings...Use lots of carb or brake cleaner and make sure everything is clean. As stated before farm stores..tsc...atwoods...places like this are GREAT and normally will beat most other stores prices and will be of good quality. You had quite a bit of play so I would guess you probably got some pretty good heat in there so I would really watch the spindles. Also BE SURE the races fit back into the hub if you reuse the hubs...alot of times they will spin and you won't know it. If you spun a race you still dont' have to replace the hub. Take a punch and hammer and on the inside of the hub make about 6 to 8 divets on the inside of the hub where the race meets the hub surface. This expands the surrounding metal and will normally allow the race to fit tighter. ALso someone said don't forget the seals...be sure to get new seals everytime you replace or repack bearings....just a good precaution. Hope it all works out for you.

I looked at your pics...you should have a nut with slots in it for a cotter key to go through. Just fyi...I don't really like the bearing buddies, Makes me feel better to repack every year or two. You will normally get water intrusion if you go to the lake alot anyways. More times than not I've also seen that bearing buddies tend to grease the outer bearing and the inner...larger bearing doesn't get greased well.

ok I see now..I did not have any cotter pins to start with.. you put the hub on , then the outer bearing, then a flat sided washer, then a tabbed washer, then the nut...how tight is too tight?

How tight is too tight? The old way was to turn the wheel around and while it was still spinning, tighten the nut until the drag of the bearing slowed the wheel down fast enough to notice. Then you backed the nut up one flat (approximately 60 degrees), and locked it in the closest hole with a cotterpin or just bent the lock tab over if you had that set up.

The new way is with a torque wrench and a specification chart.

The reason that the bearing is a little loose is that when you set it the clearences allows the bearing to get warm without increasing the preload to damaging point.

As a side note, whenever I stop while pulling a trailer, I always check the tire temperature with the palm of my hand and the bearing temperature with the back of my hand on the hubs immeadiately after getting out of the cab. The little walk around also lets me check the load bindings and general condition of the rig. It has saved my bacon. I also carry some Handi Wipes in the cab so I have no excuse!
