I have a trailer type boat. It probably won't be docked at a marina. After I am done boating for the day, it will go right back on the trailer. Do you guys leave it at the marina or tow it back home???

Re: Trailer Boat Home or Leave at Marina...

There are many issues that would help to make that decision. How close are you to the lake? What does it cost in fuel to pull it? Do you have covered storage available at home? What does it cost? What does the marina charge? Do you have the equipment needed for marina storage such as auto bilge pump, dock bumpers, on board battery charger .....? There are other factors too like cleaning the hull after long term in the water and increased fuel costs due to buying fuel on the lake. Is you tow vehicle reliable enough to pull it on a regular basis? Convenience is not the only factor or it would be a much easier decision.

I tow mine back home because I live 40 minutes from the water and like to work/clean on the boat in my spare time. I also found covered storage 5 minutes from home for $40.00 a month. I have a good tow vehicle and don't trust a boat sitting in the water unattended.

I have never understood leaving a trailer boat in the water. It just scares me.

Are you asking about storing it at the marina on the trailer vs towing it home?

Not scary at all if you are set up right for it......
I have a good auto bilge switch, 2 group 27 batteries, full cockpit and bow covers....

Mine is on a mooring behind my house 6 months out of the year, the mooring lets it move with the wind and waves and I don't have to deal with idiot drivers trailering, now that's scary!

If everyone would go back and read what he's written I think he's saying the boat is going to come out of the water after every use. The question is whether anybody would feel safe leaving it on the trailer in the marina's parking lot?

I don't think I would. I like mine in my driveway where I can keep an eye on things and my dog can alert me to any "visitors". Then again, I live less than a mile to the ramp so towing it isn't much trouble.

If you have a place to keep it out of your hair at home, I'd take it. I just got mine off-site for the first time in a while and it's nice having the space back.

Re: Trailer Boat Home or Leave at Marina...

I have a 25 ft. Chris Craft cabin cruiser. (30 feet. long bow pulpit to swim platform.) Not a simple task for towing, but I tow it 50 miles one-way to West Point Lake in Georgia.

My 2003 Chevy Suburban Uses a little less than 1/2 a tank round trip to get the boat there and back. ($40.00) approximately, mid-grade gas costing nearly $3.oo bucks a gallon here.

To store it at the lake on my trailer in a covered space with power for my battery chargers, it would cost me $120.00 a month, 12 months a year!

Therefore to be cost effective, I would have to go to the lake at least 3 times a month 12 months out of the year! I know I'm in Georgia, but it's 30 degrees this morning & I'm not on the lake from about October through March.

I tow it back and forth, not just for the cost issues pointed out above, but I also have it in my driveway, safe, and anytime I want I can go out and clean, polish, tinker, or begin projects at my leisure with all my tools easily accessible. (My son has even "Camped out" in the boat in the driveway. LOL...) You can't do that at the marina...

I was taught at an early age to put my toys away whenever I was done playing with them. I also do that with my tools.

The moral being that you know where it is and no one else can mess with them.

Take it home & put it away.

I marina-stored on the trailer for 2 seasons back when I had a 4500# boat and no good tow vehicle. My jeep was fine for launching but was way too light for towing any distance. The price for trailer storage in their lot included unlimited launching.
In those 2 years we had a pair of waterskis stolen and had the mooring light damaged by a neighboring sailboat (who stepped his mast and dropped it!). Never got the skiis back but the sailboater manned-up and paid for a new light.
All in all, it worked out OK for us but I would've preferred to keep it at home.

Around here, this is called a "dry slip." A parking place for your boat and trailer at or near the ramp. Very popular, and often hard to find.
IMO it is the third* best arrangement for your boat, if that is the main place you will use it, or it is close to home. When the boat is right there at the ramp, ready for an easy splash and haul out, you will use it way more often. You don't have to mess with straps, securing stuff, etc. or gettnig a tow vehicle. If you cover it, you don't have to tie it down for trailering, just for weather.
The nice thing about being in a dry slip rather than wet, you pull the plug and don;t have to worry about bilge pump failure, bottom paint, storm tides or other weather issuesm, and electrolysis.
Security for your stuff is simply a matter of where you keep it. Some marina's are safe, some aren't. At some, only loose stuff is at risk (toys, ropes, etc., often taken by the guy who forgot his). A cover often cures this. If your in-dash electronics are at risk, however, I would look elsewhere.
There are lots of places that rent a parking space in a fenced lot near the ramp. In that case, security is an issue, and you probably already have it hooked up for trailering.

Boating is a leisure activity. The more you can eliminate time spent on it that is not on the water, the better. Then you can enjoy that hour (or less) boatride by adding only 5 minutes to launch and 5 to retrieve, and an easy drive. Otherwise, to make it worthwhile, you have to commit the better part of the day to use the boat at all.

Obviously, all of the choices are affected by what's available and what you can afford. Nothing else about boating is free or cheap; storage and slipping is the same. Boating is a luxury and you pay for convenience.

*first is at your house in the water, second in the water at the marina, ready to go. I guess the "boat hotel" arrangement would be in the second, as well. Third is dry slip, fourth is remote storage, fifth at home if you have room, last is at home when you don't have room!

I didn't see this mentioned...one of main reasons we keep boat at home instead of storage at lake is that there are 3 to 5 lakes in immediate area we boat. And, every so often, we will take a longer trip to a further away lake. We have friends that only boat at our "primary" lake and they do store their boat at marina in gated/locked outdoor storage. They've never had a problem and storage at marina works great for them.

Unless it would be a real chore to trailer it home, I couldn't imagine not having here with me, kind of like one of my children. For example:
Cleaning it up after use, stocking it with needed items before leaving, test cranking, the usual (continual I should say) maintenance, worrying if it's ok on the lot. I like tinkering with it and I admit I just like to go out to the barn and look at it.

I agree. Don't think I could sleep soundly if it wasn't right where I could see it. I too like to tinker and clean the boat, and if I get a bright idea, it's right there where I can measure, template and modify to my hearts content. Never put my kids in daycare and don't want someone else looking after my boat.

Of course, your boat CAN be stolen right out of your driveway. (Does that ring a bell with anyone?)

If it's in the backyard it's easier whenever you want to just sit in it & make motor noises!

Re: Trailer Boat Home or Leave at Marina...

I keep mine at home because we have close access to several outstanding lakes. We're spoiled in that regard. I know spdracer will agree. It's also convenient when I want to work on her, and while it's true she can be stolen from your house just as easily as from a dry slip, if she's stolen from your house you'll know about it a lot sooner. That matters. That said, I have a large back yard with double drive gate and privacy fence, so if you don't know she's back there you don't know she's back there.;) My wife and I agreed long ago that suitable outside toy storage is one of the very few non-negotiables any time we're house shopping. For those who don't have that luxury off site storage is a viable option. I'd sleep fine.
