For the cost of simple hydraulic surge brakes, I would never be bothered to change out simply the shoes. Entire 2" x 12" (6000lb axle) free backing surge brake assemblies are only $57 up here in Canada. They gotta be cheaper in the states. Regardless, simply unbolt and rebolt and you get new shoes, master cylinder, springs, etc. I just did both sides with assemblies, bearing kits, and turned the hubs for $245, taxes in, and we get gouged up here!

That really doesn't sound too bad cave. The good news is the master will be a piece of cake. It will take you longer to bleed the lines than it will to replace it.

Just read the posts and you had a fire because your brake was hung up I believe, if it was a bearing you would have heard one heck of a squelling sound before it locked up or overheated to the point the grease caught on fire.
