Just bought a boat. The PO decided it was a good idea to remove the master cylinder for the trailer brakes rather than fix them. I want to fix them. How do I know which cylinder to get, or does it matter? It's a 23' tandem axle trailer. Thanks guys.

Re: Trailer Brakes

Is it just the master cylinder itself that was removed or did he remove the entire coupler and replace it with a standard non-brake coupler? If the entire coupler is removed, by the entire surge brake coupler. If only the master cylinder was removed, it needs to be sized for the number of wheels on which you have brakes. If only one axle has brakes the master cylinder must have enough fluid displacement to support that. It obviously needs the fluid displacement capacity for four wheels if both axles have brakes. Mounting and linkage concerns enter the picture as well. Get the name (Atwood, etc.) off the coupler and go with the master cylinder for that coupler.

Ayuh,.... If the hyd. coupler has been Stripped,...
Replace the Whole Unit,....
Fixing what you have left will be More expensive, than just replacing....
