I have a 1972 Starcraft Starchief I/O and am shopping for a trailer. Anyone know what is a safe weight capacity for this boat? Any recommendations for a trailer manufacturer that can match a trailer to the boat? I am currently looking at Platinum Boat Trailers but would like to know of other manufacturers before buying.

If you have it on a trailer currently, I would weigh what you have and go from there. Add weight for fuel, water and gear if the boat doesn't have all that when you weigh it.

In the Starcraft brochure section link, the 1972 brochure -http://s1089.photobucket.com/user/C...rcraft Brochure/scan0011.jpg.html?sort=3&o=36 - shows a Starchief I/O weighs in at 1035 + the I/O. The I/O weight chart;

Using an example Mercruiser 165 weight of 706 + 1035 gives a bare weight of about 1740 and add batteries, fuel, safety gear with anything else, so round it up to a total of 2500 pounds. Add a 600 lb Platinum single axle trailer for a total of 3100, so 3500 lb GVWR trailer should work with a margin of error.

I'm guessing at a MC 165, so your boat weight could be different. I used a Platinum trailer cuz that's one brand you mentioned, but I have no trailer brand recommendation. It is still best to weigh the boat and current trailer for better numbers.

You have been looking for a trailer of quite a while now. Are you getting closer to upgrading?

After shopping around, I decided to go with Loadmaster Aluminum Trailers. They manufactured one to fit the boat. It has a 3500 lb capacity torsion single axle.
I did weigh the boat while on the old escort trailer and it weighed 2,560 lbs. Figuring five or six hundred pounds for the trailer, my boat is close to 2000 lbs with fuel, gear and supplies,etc
I now feel safe towing the boat on long hauls.
Thanks for all the information and help.
