Trailer help please?

I just purchased a 22' Hurricane Fun Deck boat with an outboard. It did not come with a trailer and I am on the hunt for one. Getting one made is pretty pricey and if I have to I will go that route. I would like to find a used trailer but don't know if i need to get a trailer specific to my boat or are there other trailers that my boat will go on? I've been told that i would probably need a tandem for sure but I'd hate to buy one then load the boat and then it not fit. I don't have any problems with fabricating a used boat trailer to fit but it's the initial loading and getting it home to set it up to fit. Should the back of the trailer be where the end of the boat should sit? Or is it more where the bunks will set on the boat?

TIA for all help on this.

Re: Trailer help please?

Trailers need to be set up for whatever boat they are carrying. Considering your complete lack of experience with boats (based on you post), I would suggest purchasing a trailer from a dealer that specializes in trailers. Preferably someone that also sells the Hurricane boat. They will have the specs required to set up the trailer for your model. They may also have a used tandem axle trailer available, and get brakes on both axles, preferably discs.

Your boat is too large and heavy for you to be messing with and incorrectly adjusting the support bunks and rollers could end up damaging your boat, costing you more than a new trailer would.

A properly set up trailer can make loading and unloading a pleasure, conversely, a poorly set up one can make it truly hell. Not to mention it will tow better.

I really think that this is one area best left to a professional, at least until you get more experience in what to look for.

Thanks for the input. I am pretty much back to a newbie. My parents had a checkmate back in the late 80's that i took out but it was set up with trailer and that was a long time ago. This is my first actual boat and this has helped. I have found a few places that say they make them to spec for my boat and will call them next week.
