Hi,

I recently imported a boat and a trailer from US to Canada. I need the trailer's information for a survey. English is not my primary language so I need a little help. I saw 2 slightly different weigth on the name plate. GWVR and GAVR. I was wondering if somebody could tell me what these letters mean?

Thanks.

GWVR is the Gross Weight Vehicle Rating. This is the max amount of weight it will carry including the weight of the trailer. GAVR I have not heard of. GAWR is Gross Axle weight rating. The Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is the amount of weight that each of the front and rear axles of the truck can carry. This total is what the vehicle is designed to carry. Period. It is not an average. The total of the front and rear axles will not equal the GWVR, but will exceed it. The GWVR is of major concern, but cannot exceed the GAWR. Hope this helps.

Yes it helped me.

You mentioned front and rear axle. But what if my trailer has only 1 axle? I guess that the weight written on the name plate is for 1 axle only.

Is it possible with these numbers to get the trailer weight? Because I can't see this info anywhere and I need it.

Thanks again!

That would be what I understand also. All I did was googled GWVR and came up with the answers. There is quite a few hits on it and lots that you can read. Good luck..

The abbreviation is GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Maximum combined weight of load and the trailer. The GAWR = Gross Axle Weight Rating is the maximum weight the axle is capable of carrying. There is a third factor and that is tires. On those ID plates you will often see several sets of these numbers and the numbers vary depending on the size and load capacity of the tires. So the tire size is generally listed as well.

If I understand correctly, GVWR minus GAWR should give you the trailer's weigth?
