Re: trailer spindel

For thoughs of you out there want to see what happins when you dont maintain or improperly maintain your trailer this is it. When I preloaded the barings I backed it off to far then redid the prelaod with out knocking the hub loose. All this did was make it tighter than what it needed to be. The result only the bearing cages and races where left and the races just fell out of the hub. Luckly the nut held it all on.

Preload? Doesn't look like there has been any grease in there for years

Re: trailer spindel

The rust and grime is from letting it sit for 9 months while I was in Iraq.

[EDIT] Also could have been from a couple hundred miles of it barily hanging on and grinding on the races.

If there had been grease in there and the bearings had been grinding for a couple hundred miles, you would have had a fire and would see burnt grease all over everything. Looks more like the last time it was put back together that it was assembled with no grease at all.

The white rim was solid black once I reached my final destonation. Unfortunalty I did it wrong and it is not going to be a cheap fix.

Looks like a whole new axle is in order. What capacity is the trailer?

7000 pound GVW tractor supply has some 3500 pound axles. I just hope they are the right width and same bolt pattren.
