To replace the cobb job welded 1 7/8 ball coupler on my trailer with a 2" ball coupler, I had to cut the tongue 2" shorter. I haven't attached the 2" coupler on yet. Will the shorter 2" difference affect towing?
What are kind of rig are pulling and with what? I can see a couple of possible concerns;
2" shorter will change tongue weight slightly. In my opinion, probably nothing to worry about pending an answer to to the question..
Lift gate or tail gate clearance, if it was tight before, it will be closer now.
you'll have to back down the ramp that much farther. I guess that could be good or bad depending on tide, ground clearance of your tow vehicle, condition of ramp, etc.
Sorry, this posting was for my "junk" trailer, not boat trailer, so that's why I did not post in the boating section. However, thanks for repllies, all very helpfull.:facepalm:
I say there will be no disenable differences at all. If you cut two feet, then we would have a different answer. But I honestly don't think you will notice any difference at all. Don't worry about tongue weight changes or backing effects or ground clearances or any of those things. Not enough to make any real difference. If you haven't attached the new coupler on yet, you could even slide it forward to make up that 2" difference and weld it on. Then everything would be back to same setup if you're concerned. I only suggest that because a 1 7/8" coupler is not installed on class III setups meaning not that heavy of a trailer. So you can easily get by sliding it forward only IF you weld it in place... JMHO!
