Re: Trailer winch tower bow stop adjustment

It is a little difficult to tell from the pics, but it looks like if the strap pulled from the bottom of the reel then the last few inches of pull would be in more of a straight line and perhaps the hook would not be under so much pressure from that angle it is forced into now once the boat reaches the stop.

Re: Trailer winch tower bow stop adjustment

I just rewound my strap to fix a similar situation with my Carlise trailer and 2007 FW H180...
Going under the assumption that when you now crank the winch handle in a clockwise direction that you are winding the strap onto the winch (tightening it), unwind the entire length of the strap and then start rewinding it back on the winch using a counterclockwise handle rotation. This will leave you with the hook end of the strap coming off the winch at the bottom of the reel and not the top, and leaving it on a more level line with the boat hook.

With this new set-up, you will of course be cranking the winch opposite of where it was. You'll go CCW to bring in the strap and CW to let it out.

Thanks Fotto. I was thinking to get the strap to go from the bottom I'd have to crank the other way or turn the winch 180 {can't really do that & if you did the freewheel toggle would be on the front}. So I assume the ratcheting & the freewheel toggle still work?

If your Winch doesn't "Ratchet" in both directions, This is not going to work!
Does it "Click" as you pull OUT the strap?

Can you please explain why it is winding on wrong?

Sorry did not mean say it was winding wrong. If it comes off of the bottom, the strap is horizontal to the bow eye which would make it easier to bring bow eye closer.

Thanks Thalasso, Do you know how I can get it to do that? I tried briefly to get it to roll from the bottom, but it kept going to the top. I should mention this had a steel cable on it when I got it, and I drilled a hole, installed the retainer bolt, and installed the strap. Could that be the problem?

Also Thalasso, I'm guessing your signature indicates you were in Vietnam. I guess You have some pretty great stories?

Explanation is pretty spot on in post #22. And yes i was in the brown water navy. Stories, couldn't begin to tell you.

No, if you flip the toggle toward the front of trailer it freewheels, then if you click it toward back of trailer it engages the gear teeth and ratchets. So, I don't believe I can get the strap to wind from the bottom with this set up.

WOW; I'm sure! Thanks for your service!

Measure the distance between the bracket that holds the bow roller (its between 3-4 inches
buy a 3/4 SS bolt that will span the distance with a lock nut
drill holes in both sides of the bracket about 1/2 way between the bow roller and the winch
cut a piece of PVC (3/4 should work making a sleeve) and put it between the two holes that you drilled
slide bolt through bracket and PVC and tighten

run strap from winch under bolt and PVC and then up to bow eye

problem solved

Good point. You'll need a "two way" winch in order for this to work vs a "one way".
