Is it common for the trailer to be a year older than the boat? This is what a dealer told me. So the trailer can be ready to receive the boat. Any truth to this?

It is common for hull, motor, and trailer to each have a date off +/- a year. On significantly older boats expect both the trailer and motor to be newer than the hull.

I don't think there is much to having the trailer ready as the boat builder getting a better deal on last year's models.

sure who cares as long as they aren't two or three years apart and the trailer holds the boat. ;)

Ayuh,... Exactly....

Motors,+ Drives,+ most Outboards today are sold/ serviced by Serial #s....
The Year isn't even questioned....

If the Boat Manufacturer's didn't have to Date Code their Hulls,... They wouldn't Either....

Re: trailer year is off by boat year

in minnesota trailers used to be dated by the year they were first licenced. so if a dealer sold a boat he had on his lot for say 3 yrs the trailer would have a 3 yr newer date because it had never been licensed. i think that they have changed it now to match the manufacture date on the trailer. about 10 yrs ago my partner bought a trailer at the boat show. as with most winter boat shows it's buy now pick up in april or may so you are buying sight unseen. when he got home with the trailer he realized by the mfg date the trailer was 5yrs old. the dealer insisted it was a new trailer (and it certainly looked brand new) so he called the state AG about fraud. they searched the ser# and said the trailer had never been sold or licenced so as far as the state was concerned it was brand new. so his title says 5 yrs differant from the manufacture date.

My '89 Marlin has an '88 trailer. Not sure if it is the original trailer or not as the guy I got the boat from apparently had another of the same boat (couple years different) and in the pictures before I bought it the boat was on a nicer looking trailer. I think he switched the boat he was keeping to the nicer trailer. Still is the same model of trailer that came with the boat from the factory. Oh well, nothing a bit of sanding and paint can't fix. This summer I gotta find a place to keep the boat in the water for a couple day so I can completely go over the trailer.

Per Marquette's remarks, we were among those who bought at the Minneapolis boat show last year. The rig was delivered to the dealer in mid-March. We closed on it at the time to take advantage of various promotions that ended on 3/31/2008 (extended warranties, free stuff, etc), but didn't pick up the boat until 05/01/2008.

All of the components - boat, motor, trailer - were built in the same year, 2008. In fact, the boat was built on my birthday, and it was the 60th Anniversary Edition of Lund to boot (which just happened to be my age at the time!). The Mercury motor was built in January, as was the Shoreland'r trailer.

Anyway, guess we got lucky since everything was the same year, but I wouldn't have been concerned if the motor or trailer were from the previous year.

Yes this is very common...esspecially for trailers that are adjustable and aren't custom built to a specific boat.

My 2003 boat has a 2004 trailer. I didn't think twice.
