Re: trailor tax problem

When I bought my boat and trailer the paper work had to be notarized with a bill of sale. The previous owner listed the trailer worth $100.00. Based on the value and size of trailer is how the fees were determined. I opted to pay for a lifetime tag that cost what would have been about three years of fees and that was only about $135.00. I can't see how they can charge you for what the previous owner didn't do as they register it in your name with new plates and tag. If your paper work didn't separate the cost of the boat and trailer they are going to charge for the overall cost at the DMV and then your going through the same thing with the boat registration too.

I just went through this in Louisiana. Your only option is to do a double transfer of the title. You will need a notarized bill of sale from when he bought the boat. You will then need to pay his taxes and fees. Once this is done, you can then transfer the title in your name with another bill of sale showing you purchased the boat. I used a privately ran title business in Bossier City near Ralph and Kacoos and they were extremely nice and helpful. Cost me an additional $130 bucks though by having to pay his fees.

Good luck!
