transom tie downs are not supposed to be ratcheted down super tight. With the exception of the leverage you get in a wider spread of the tie downs I'm sure going to the ski tow would be fine. I guess it you drive at 60 mph down washboard roads then you may want the boat tied down real tight but otherwise it is not necessary.

Attaching transom tie-downs to the ski tow eye seems like a pretty horrible idea to me. Those things aren't even up to pulling tubes (see all the topics this season about people yanking ski tow eyes out from pulling towables), so using them to anchor your boat to your trailer can't be a good idea. Ski eyes are usually attached to a thick area of fiberglass with some sort of backer board (often 1/2" plywood) while the transom eyes are thru-bolted through 2" of plywood sandwiched with fiberglass.

The shock on the transom straps (e.g., when hitting a bump) would only be magnified if they were slack, so tighter makes more sense to me.

If it were my boat, I'd move the transom eyes a bit outboard, fill the old holes properly and be done with it.

Guess I forgot to come back to this after a trial this weekend :sorry: :

I went ahead and mounted the sternsaver right about where I taped it up in the photos above. Over the weekend I mounted the head end in a spot to try it out (if I don't like it there no one will even notice the holes drilled for the screws) and just ran the transduce cable up over the gunwale.

Everything worked fine. I got good returns off the bottom and it seemed to match the TVA depth numbers pretty close. Depth and imaging seems to fall apart if you try and run on plane, but I read there "might" be some work arounds for that. It's not super important to me, but If I can figure out a way to make it go I will.

I'll probably run one more weekend playing around before I drill a spot for the transducer cable. Haven't seen a fish yet :)
