wasn't sure if this belonged here or in a tech section.

I just bought a transom mount transducer for my ski/fish. don't like the shoot thru that came with it. not sure exactly where it should be placed on the back. in the pic i was thinking of putting it where the yellow box is and routing the wire up under the swim platform and bringing it in just under the platform where the green box is.

will it be too close to the drive and create problems? or should it be ok at this location? thanks

Re: transducer placement??

Too close. Move it out another 6" or so.

I will move this to Electrics, electronics, etc. This forum is for fishing tackle and techniques.

Re: transducer placement??

I just installed a hummingbird on my boat. I believe the install instructions (which apply to all ff) indicates that the transducer should be installed a minimum of 15" from the end point of the blade on the prop to prevent the cavitation from giving false readings.

I believe if you check the tech docs on the manufacturers website, it'll tell you there req's. To far is better than too close (I know from the last boat I had. The previous owner installed it about 7-8" from the prop and when I started the motor, 100s of bass flocked to the rear of my boat but I could never catch on :D:D:D)

Yeah you'll want to move it out further for use at high speed...probably will interfere at low speed to.

Hey Nelson, did you get one of the ones from CTC? I got the 535 as well(too cheap to pass up!)...but I can't seem to get the transducer high enough to not rooster tail and still keep it in the water on plane...I think I'll give up on the high speed use and just move it out of the water when on plane.

Re: transducer placement??

I ended up with the 383c with GPS from Costco (the 535 from CTC was a sweet deal but I already had mine installed). I have the same problem you've mentioned with the rooster tail. I'm thinking about redrilling a little higher up on the transom and do what you've mentioned on giving up on the high speed. I think putting it just above the water line with a slight tilt downwards will solve the rooster tail and still allow higher speeds (I get readings at 45MPH)

However, if that doesn't work, I may go to the hull mount transducer (approx $70 at LeBaron) and go that route. Downside is you lose the water temp sensor.
