Re: Transfer Case Leak Suddenly Much Worse After Service
Tell them to save the old parts for your inspection.
Why do they need to replace the case if a 'grooved shaft' caused the seal to weep?
Are they replacing the shaft?
What about the bushing behind the seal, is it worn?
Take a magnifying glass, clean rags, can of carb/brake/electrical parts cleaner so you can clean any suspect surfaces.
Since they may be charging 50% they are still coming out way ahead, as that 50% covers the parts, they are only out the profit, YOU are still paying for any excess parts.
If you are not familiar with the parts then take them to an independent for inspection.
Output shafts on transmissions and transfer cases have a bushing behind the seal that wears. Once worn the shaft is allowed to wobble slightly causing the seal to 'egg' and begin to weep. Changing the shaft won't cure the problem, the root cause is the bushing.
Changing the case is overkill, change the bushing, IF, the tech knows how. In this day and age of designed obsolescent parts, the bushing may not be available separately and then the casing must be changed.
