Awesome. That must be going in right there in front of the RV park. We've long needed a marina in that area. Hope it does well.

When we bought her the GS I tried to get her to consider a couple of other brands (mainly Audi) just for giggles. She sorta did to humor me, but there's no doubt in my mind she wouldn't have settled for anything but another Lexus, and just between us girls, any car that can survive that many miles with her behind the wheel is a heck of a ride.

It's baaaaaaaaack. Noticed the tell tale spots on the garage floor Saturday morning and took it back Tuesday morning. The repair had a 12/12 warranty, and of course I was out of it by 600 miles. The dealership is covering the tear down and splitting the replacement cost with me. They tore the whole thing apart expecting to find a grooved or pitted shaft or something that would cause this but only discovered that the seal had hardened for no apparent reason. Ford is covering this repair for 24/24 which makes me wonder why they didn't do that the first time. I had forgotten until yesterday but this is actually the third time this has been done. The first was a week or so after I bought the truck and the dealer who sold it to me reluctantly took care of it. So, I guess this is a pattern. Just don't know what to make of it. I really love the truck.

Either excessive heat or just plain crap material on the seals. I'm guessing crap material.

They called this afternoon to say they found a grooved shaft after all. New case will only be a few bucks more so I told them go ahead. Now the problem is they won't have it done until Monday at the soonest (I'm betting on Tuesday since the new case doesn't arrive until Monday) and they won't give me anything to drive. Seven days minimum without transportation thanks to them and the best they can do is a rental at my expense at their discounted rate. Thanks but no thanks. Ford has taken away loaner cars I'm told. I guess I could go "test drive" a few LOL. Clowns.

Sorry boys! My Alzheimer's kicked in again. I had a tranny seize up on me once in the middle of winter on the hwy. a gasket let go that I knew was leaking. 4 spins later I ended up backwards in a 5' snow bank at -30 100 miles from the nearest help. couple thousand $ later I learned my lesson. Fix it !! First.

Yup! That is what I was trying to say. Fix it before you have a serious problem.

Tell them to save the old parts for your inspection.

Why do they need to replace the case if a 'grooved shaft' caused the seal to weep?

Are they replacing the shaft?

What about the bushing behind the seal, is it worn?

Take a magnifying glass, clean rags, can of carb/brake/electrical parts cleaner so you can clean any suspect surfaces.

Since they may be charging 50% they are still coming out way ahead, as that 50% covers the parts, they are only out the profit, YOU are still paying for any excess parts.

If you are not familiar with the parts then take them to an independent for inspection.

Output shafts on transmissions and transfer cases have a bushing behind the seal that wears. Once worn the shaft is allowed to wobble slightly causing the seal to 'egg' and begin to weep. Changing the shaft won't cure the problem, the root cause is the bushing.

Changing the case is overkill, change the bushing, IF, the tech knows how. In this day and age of designed obsolescent parts, the bushing may not be available separately and then the casing must be changed.

Because dealerships generally swap in a whole new transfer case if the issue requires more than just changing the seals. At dealer labor rates doing an R&R on the tcase plus parts makes no sense to them cost wise.
