hey folks,

i have a problem with my 1994 200 salt water series yamaha motor, let me try to explain my problem, i was out yesterday pulling crab pots and engine alarm went off, found out main oil resovoir on engine was low tried the toggle switch and nothing. had to fill tank through the top. got back to the docks and tried toggle switch again and still does not work. i was looking for suggestions on what to check. possibly strainer or pump on reserve tank? is the pump on the reserve tank a common problem ? looking for suggestions and i have read the article on bass and walleye. most articles i read people have problems but can refill with the toggle switch. (this i cannot do) any suggestion would be very helpful.

thanks stoney1

Re: transfer pump not working

You're in saltwater. Look for corroded connections. The pumps don't typically wear out, but the motor driving it could develop corrosion. The pump is very quiet. See if you can hear it with the switch toggled. Otherwise it's a crapshoot between the pump, module, or a connection inbetween. The switch in the tank could also be a source, but you should be able to override that with the toggle. Also, the pump is very slow.

Re: transfer pump not working

if you pulled the strainer you need to carefully drain and clean the engine tank then pull the strainer again and verify the rubber strainer seal is in place, otherwise any debris will feed directly into the pump and cause a failure.
when was the last remote oil tank filter change? that system ,with a slight amount of maint, is bullet proof. it rarely fails. the stainer seal is a one shot seal and must be replaced anytime the strainer is removed. test the system as per the bass and walleye article and you will find the problem. like willy says listen for the pump to hum when you toggle the emergency switch with the key on. all the toggle does is complete the ground path for the pump motor, brown wire at the pump is 12+ anytime the key is on, if its not you have a bad wire or the splice at the main harness may have failed. test the resistance from the blue bullet connector to ground with the toggle in the up position, should have continuity. if not look for a broken blue wire. also check the float switch in the remote tank, if its bad or dissconected no oil transfer will occur automatically but it should still run manually.
a quick test of the pump is to use jumper leads availible at radioshack, unplug the brown and blue pump wires, jumber the blue pump wire to a known good ground and the brown pump wire to a known good 12+. if the pump runs its ok.

Have seen this same problem on many Yamys, and most often the culprit has been the harness between the motor and the remote oil tank. The problem is that you have to follow the exact diagnostic procedure, or you'll mis-diagnose it. Like Rodbolt says, it can be many different things.....
