Hi, I have a 1987 gm 4.3l v6 alpha 1. I haven't changed my trim motor oil in about 3 years. I check it all the time and looks and smells good. Can I use automatic transmission oil in there? I plan on pumping out the old oil and adding transmission oils.

Thanks

What is wrong with using regular 10W30 or 40 engine oil as recommended by Mercruiser.
If you change to ATF, you need to empty the cylinders, lines, and the reservoir. Due to they design of the reservoir, you will need to remove it to clean it out.

Thanks for the reply. I thought for some reason that it was ATF fluid. If 10w30 engine oil is recommended then that is what I will use. How often is the trim oil supposed to be changed?

THANKS AGAIN.

So it should still be good? I have checked it and it is clean and smells good.

If it is good then don't change it, or as long as it is doing the job then I don't see a reason to change it. Hope this helps
