Re: transmition stuck in reverse

Need lots more info.
1. Are you sure it is in reverse? They automatically go into forward gear when not running.

2. So, the next queston is---is it running?

3. If it is running, and actually is stuck in reverse, there are a couople of possibilities, Electrical and Hydro-mechanical. Further testing is required. But first answer #1 and #2.

Re: transmition stuck in reverse

I hate those, If it were mine I would sell/give it away and go get a newer one, I see good running 80s model v-4s all the time for $500 or less. but there are probably some guys in here that will swear that motor is worth fixing and that they are very dependable, but I just think that the 79 and up motors are a better design, just my humble opinion, and I practice what I preach after not being able to give away a 69 40HP Johnson Sea Horse that ran great but had shifter problems, I took it to the dump..RIP never looked back either, the thing was a nightmare to try to work on, invented new words while trying to pull the carbs. man and I almost completely forgot that pain..o well I will go to sleep and try to forget about it. LOL:)

Re: transmition stuck in reverse

There are two wires coming up from the lower unit, blue and green. Disconnect them. Now, with them disconnected, if it truly is in REVERSE WHEN RUNNING, and not forward, then you have trouble in the lower unit. Most likely the shifter piston is jammed in the oil pump from dirty oil and neglect. The oil pump is the last thing to come out of the gearcase and the first thing to go back in. A major operation.
