Transmits but not Receives

Ship Shore transmits to everyone fine but can only receive short range (less than a mile). It appears to be receiving long range (greater than 5 miles) but I can only hear mixed static.

Any ideas?

First tell us what you have.
Is it VHF Marine band at 156.8 mhz for channel 16 and short range?
Is it 2182 KHZ band for medium range?
Or is it the HF single sideband range?

If it is the Standard VHF band with channel 16 at 156.8 mhz then here a few things to try. Check to make sure you do not have the reciever set to local mode. The mode cuts the reciever way down to prevent it from being over loaded by a boat very close to you.
Second open the squelch till you here static with no one talking then turn it back intill the sound just goes quite.
Last plug in an external speaker to make sure your speaker is not bad.

It would really help if you list the brand and model radio so we know what you have.

Try listing to the strongest weather channel in your area.

check out for broken mic wires at both ends of cord

It is a Standard Horizon GX1000S

Weather Channel comes in fine. Last trip out had a friend about 8 miles out receiving my transmit perfectly but I could not hear him until he was within a mile of me. He was running two radios and tried both to contact me.
