Thanks for the words of encouragement thrillhouse. What did you fill scratches and chips with? are you painting or gelcoating? I find the work fun and relaxing actually and due to christmas I will be taking time since I wont be able to afford gelcoat till after christmas with having to buy presents and all.

Great work with the flip! I just can't seem to get myself to order up an engine hoist. One of those things where everything else on the wish list always gets priority. I have to say.. you are so lucky not to have chines! I have that exact sander and could only use it on the transom.

absolutely push it to the front of the list. I use mine for all kinds of stuff. If you are working alone it is invaluable. You can use it for lifting anything heavy as long as you can sling it.

Re: transom and floor replacement

I didnt get anything done on the boat tonight since my DA sander broke after about 5 minits. the bearing just fell apart. I guess 3 cars and half a boat was all I get for $30. Since I had a fire going and the seam from the cap was staring up at me I did fill it with a tube of marine silicone. I think I took on alot of water from the seem last year so I filled it well and with it upside down, excess will only run deeper in the crack. Oh well out tomorrow to buy christmas and a new da for me.
I found a company that has gelcoat at a great price and they premix the color. Only one problem they have 3 yellows and no pictures on any of them. So I called them and told them I thought this may be a problem in picking out the color and the guy agreed with me. He said he will try to do something wether its send me paint chips, email pics of paint chips or what I dont know but I am glad I started researching this early.

SKIBUM1M,
Great job on the boat flip,
I knew you could do it. :D
I don't think you will regret it either.
Now it will be so much easier to finish.
Great progress.

Re: transom and floor replacement

Thank you Bob, I just picked up some long strand bondohair to fill the worn spot under the drain plug. I also picked up another $30 DA and some 180 sandpaper for my long board. I will get a pic of all the bodytools I am using and post it tonight or tomorrow. I think I will be finished prep work long before I can get the gelcoat but that will give me more time to go over and over the hull to make sure it is perfect.

Re: transom and floor replacement

Tonight I got the worn edge in the back of the boat built up and sanded smooth. Why dont people use longstrand fiberglass filler instead of peanut butter? Well anyway here are a few pics of the repair and a pic of my bodytools.
IMG00123-20091209-2256.jpg

here Is some body tools from top left clockwise... 180 grit board paper, 80 grit DA paper, My new DA sander, Air file, Box of 260 frit DA paper, 24 inch firm rubber sanding block (this thing is huge and takes a ton of work to move but gets lines streight), 4 different firmness hand sanding blocks.

Here is the rear of the boat I stripped some kind of goop that po covered this with. It is worn down pretty bad.

All better.

Re: transom and floor replacement

Thanks Bob,
I found dents in the hull where the rollers on the trailer rest. They are just enough to feel. Should I fill these? Do they slow the boat or cause any other problems in the water? I am thinking of changing the trailer over to bunks now.

Re: transom and floor replacement

SKIBUM1M,
It really depends on how bad the dents are. I would recommend laying a straight across them and measure the dip. You may need to use fairing compound to straighten it out. I'm sure that some others with more experience will chime in on this one.
I have heard that rollers have caused problems like this for a good number of years.
Bummer, Just what you needed more work. :(

Re: transom and floor replacement

They are about an eigth inch deep over a 3 inch area. I didnt know you could dent fiberglass but I guess over years of stress.
What exactly is faring compound? can anything else be used in its place ? I dont think it is available locally.

Re: transom and floor replacement

SKIBUM1M,
Fairing compound is a filler, used to fill in imperfections on the hull. I would suggest you look at Oops thread. He covered it in pretty good detail.
At the beginning of his thread he posted an index to keep the searching easier.
You can get it at Iboats, US composites, and local Marinas.
I'm not sure an 1/8" will hurt that much. I will try to do some searching for you too. I know I read a post not to long ago.
Hope this helps.

Re: transom and floor replacement

I am going to see if I can get some faring compound locally today. other than that I am just sanding and filling scratches and chips. nothing exciting and probably pointless since gelcoat is so thick but I am used to automotive paint and having to have everything perfect before spraying. I think gelcoat is the oposite. spray then smooth it out by sanding. oh well this gives me a reason to be in the garage.

Re: transom and floor replacement

Wow, I just read your thread beginning to end. You are moving! I will be hitting you up on the gelcoating as opposed to just paint when I get there for sure. I am going to have the same issue as you with the rollers pushing an area of the hull in- I can see it on the back side of the boat already on the one side. I'm assuming right now it was because my stringer on that side is rot.
Keep up the good work!

Re: transom and floor replacement

Thanks Micks. I am almost ready for gelcoating but it is on hold till after Christmas shopping. This is probably a good thin because it makes me look for stuff to do and since the hull is flipped all that leaves is filling every little scratch
