Re: transom and floor replacement

Thats funny Bob, I feel the same way you and archbuilder do I just wanted to make sure noone minded. Tonight I cleared some space around the boat. I really need to get the gelcoat soon so I can make some progress.
Wow Its my birthday. Doesnt seem to have the effect it did when I was young. At least my oldest daughter gets excited about it. Only because it is her birthday too. After 21 it's all downhill. So this is my eight 29th birthday.

Happy Birthday! Have fun today.

Thanks for the link to the Cookbook. I've started reading it. Too cold to do anything else right now.

Thanks Bob, Archbuilder, and Mountain Man.
I am Getting pretty excited about getting back on the boat. Looks like saturday will be the day to spray the hull. I figure I will start a fire friday morning and keep it going so the air as well as the hull will be up to about 77 degrees by saturday.

SKIBUM1M,
Hey man, it sounds like a great plan. Most people don't think about the temperature of the sub strait they are painting, just the ambient air.
I'll be looking forward to seeing the results.

Re: transom and floor replacement

You dont know how tempted I am to do that, but I have a dinner to go to. I would skip it but I am being introduced to alot of local politicians at it and hopefully it will be the first step toward me running for a town position. I am sure when I get home from it I will play with the gun and some uncatalysed gelcoat just to get the spraypattern down and hopefully find out it will go thru the gun. But you are probably right I will end up spraying it friday night. But that is it, there is no way I am going to the dinner in a suit with yellow hair.

Re: transom and floor replacement

Ok I dont know what I was thinking, but I was going to leave the transom to gelcoat with the cap. So tonight I started prepping the transom, I filled the motor mount holes with tigerhair and smoothed them. Then I crawled under and unbolted the transom eyes. Then realized I need to fill some areas around the motorwell. The cap didnt come all the way down to the top of the seacast, so tomorrow I have to go get a piece of hardwood to fill the gap then fill the corners with tigerhair and smooth it, as the cutout area is not completely covered by the aluminum trim that covers the seam.

Funny how when you think you are "really ready" you aren't! I hate that!

Looks like you did a pretty thorough job on the prep! Man it looks almost identical to ours when we filled and faired. Im sorry to hear about your wife. I can't imagine how tough that is, Id gladly have another Kidney Stone so she could stay with you and your family :) Either way keep at it and keep your head up.

I went to lowes to get a piece of oak to fill the gap and found something better. I am using a piece of trex decking. The stuff guts like wood but is made of rcycled plastic. Now I dont have to worry about replacing rotten wood. I think I will use the same stuff for the back seat support beam which was rotted. Thanks for the concern thrillhouse.

Thrillhouse, How are you feeling? I remember a few years ago seeing a show about using a laser to break up kidney stones. I guess it was painless and took no surgery. Maybe a possibility. But probably too expensive for insurance companys to cover.

Hi Skibum1m

I just re-read your thread....awsome read! :D

youre doing a great job too! Im very interested in seeing reading the gelcoat process...I know its TONS of work, then again so is a custom paint job with clear coat, especially if its sanded and polished afterwards like a show car etc....lots of elbow grease!

===============

My bro is 24 year navy seal veteran, he's going to Iraq instead of Afganistan this tour.......all I can say is damn those I.E.D.s!!!!!!!!
its one thing to get shot but those dang roadside bombs are bad news....
Best of luck to your wife and your family!:)

Re: transom and floor replacement

Thanks vegas, I figure gelcoat is probably the same amount of work as the paint job on my tbird was. I have seen your photoshop work and later I would like it if you could do a little work for me. Basically I will post a pic when it is all gelcoated and if you can I want to see the contrast of purple done in a few different styles on the boat before I start masking and painting.
It looks like the gelcoating may be a few days late as I ordered a wet film gauge, PVA, and styrene from conneticut today. It is going out today and should be quick but I doubt it will be here by friday night. I can not get slow cure Patchaid anywhere within 200 miles so I will use 5% styrene. The white is almost thin enough to give a good spray pattern and the neutral I am getting is lower viscosity so I figure just a little styrene will be enough to spray it ok. My biggest fear at this point is having the gelcoat kick in the gun. I am goinng to have to move very quick and mix a pint at a time instead of a quart at a time.

Skibum, sounds like a helper would be useful on the gel coat....along with lots of measuring buckets. Good luck, can't wait to see the process!

SKIBUM1M,
Wasn't your original plan to spray it out on Saturday? Is it going to make it to in time for the weekend? I'm really looking forward to seeing it coated.
Good luck, I really wish I was close enough to come and help.
Bob
