I have a really bad leak in this bayliner i just recently purchased, its a 18' 1987 capri with a 5.0 in it. they said that they hit something on a sand bar, and from what i see i looks like it just pulled away from the port side a little like a 1/16 of an inch, can just tighten the bolts to the outdrive but i have a 5.0 in it and its troublesome to find these bolts?? where are they and how many? can i just tighten them, or should i just red neck it and pump alotta silicon in it? the reason i bought this i thought it was just the bellows, it was partly and i swaped them butnow i filled the hull and it just poured out between the transome and the outdrive? what should i do? could it be the transome seal? is replacing this easy for one guy to perform?

Re: Transom and I/O troubles

So, what drive ya got Volvo? OMC Cobra? <br />Whichever one you have, if it hit hard enough to pull the transom shield away from the transome, you either have the inside nuts pulled into the wood on the transom or the threads pulling out of the studs on the transom shield. Either way, the transom sheild needs to come off and get inspected.<br />Right now the alignment of the engine and outdrive is WAY off. Don't even run it that way till you get it fixed and realigned.

Re: Transom and I/O troubles

With the alignment that far out, you are destroying the splines in the coupler. They cost $300 or more.<br />If you are mechanically inclined and have the tools and know how to use them along with a service manual yes you can fix it.<br />Just remove the drive, remove the engine, remove the exhaust Y, pull the transom shield. Fix the transom if needed, repair or replace the transom shield and with a new seal ring put it back together.<br />Check that coupler while it's apart if the splines are about worn out, replace it. You have to pull the engine to replace it anyway.

If the studs are pulled out of the aluminum housing, then you won't be able to tighten it. <br />Also the 2 that you need to tighten are UNDER the exhaust Y. Doubt you can even touch them, let alone try to tighten them.

Yes, you can pull the drive, just not the transom shield (what's leaking)<br /><br />Here are the 8 nuts you need to tighten.<br /><br />

Re: Transom and I/O troubles

wait i dont get it? how do i pull the drive then?? do you think when i pull the drive i can see where it is leaking alot better? or is it defintly the plate? is it worth trying to pull the drive and is it all external stuff to pull it? meaning do i even have to get inside of the boat to touch anything? also does drive oil come out when i pull the 4 bolts? sorry just been looking at it and getting info before i touch this thing and screw something up, lol.

Re: Transom and I/O troubles

You need a manual before you even start messing with it.<br />The drive comes off seperate from the transom shield, and should be pulled yearly for maintenance items. No you can't get to the leak by pulling the drive.

Re: Transom and I/O troubles

Just so you know Tony. You have to pull the drive to get the motor out. Second you don't want all the weight from the drive to be on the transom shield when you unbolt it from the transom. You will have a hard enough time getting the transom plate off without the drive after being wedged in like it has.

Well,..........<br />I'll Leave that Title to Don,.. Rodbolt,....And the Rest of the actual Marine Techs that hang out here at iboats,......<br /><br />Myself,..... I'm just a Cantankerous old Ba$tard, who's been swinging Wrenches longer than Most of the posters here at iboats have been Breathing,.. that has No Problem telling people Exactly What I See...............<br /><br />Unfortunately,.........Tony's Not going to Like What I See...............<br /><br />Tony,....... You bought a POS,.... Period,......<br /><br />You've got the Exact Boat that I'm Always telling folks to Avoid,.....<br /><br />No amount of Tightening of Bolts,.. Or Gooping Up with Silliseal, or anything else is going to make that boat Usable,.... <br />Much Less SAFE.... Period......<br /><br />It's NOT a Problem of Loose Bolts,........<br />The Transom in your Bilgeliner is ROTTEN,.......<br />Nothing,+ I mean Nothing short of Transom REPLACEMENT is going to make this boat Safe, or Usable,...... Period.......<br /><br />I'm Truely Sorry,.......<br />But,......<br />You're looking at really only 2 Options,........<br /><br />Pull the Complete Driveline,+ Replace the Transom,.........<br />Or,.....<br />Start pulling all the pieces,+ Sell the Parts to recoup your Money...............<br /><br />'Cause at This Point,........ All you've got is a Parts Boat in really Bad Condition.............
