Transom and jackplate question

I want to mount a 9.9 Nissan long shaft to this 15' aluminum Richline boat I just purchased. I was going to use this jackplate for now, and this winter putting in a full transom. After I replace the transom I plan to install one of the angle aluminum type jackplates that I can make myself. The transom seems good and strong, but I do not want to break anything in the process. Does this seem feasible? The jackplates states it will work on up to a 20 horse motor, so I should be good on that end of it. Let me know what you think and any thoughts and advice. I planned on just sealing up the bolt holes with a high quality silicone for now as well. When I replace the transom this winter I will do it properly and seal it with 4200, but I imagine that if I do it that way now it will be a pain to get back apart this winter. Also, the bolt holes for this jackplate will be much different from what I will eventually put on, so do I take the boat to a welder and get the old holes filled in later?

Ayuh,... Why'd ya buy a boat that Don't fit your motor,..??

And that Ain't a Jack-plate,... It's a retractable kicker bracket...
It's made to be run, Only, in the Down,+ Locked position...

Puttin' tall motors on little bitty boats makes 'em Tipper than necessary...
Get the right motor, or the right hull,...

Re: Transom and jackplate question

That was the project that I was going to save for the winter, but I was pretty sure that is the right way to do it, kind of. That does not look adjustable though. I don't think I can get it set in the perfect place first shot. Does TD have a thread on the work he did for that? I guess that means I will have to put in a full transom, or do you think I can do it with the current transom?

Bondo- That's what happens when a college student buys a longshaft motor when he does not know what he is looking for. Then he has to buy a boat that he can afford and make it work until his MBA starts to make him money. I have pondered selling the motor and buying another one, but fishing season is quickly approaching. That takes time in this market most generally too.

You can make a bracket for your current transom...... PM TD and he will probably draw up a plan for you

Re: Transom and jackplate question

your will be very simple to accommodate, the long shaft motor. rather than a jack plate, let's do a simple transom elevator. basically, it is just adding a 2x6 on top of your transom. this is a pre manufactured one http://www.iboats.com/Transom-Elevators/dm/*******.018270172--**********.575645639--view_id.40157

this is a homemade one out of some aluminum angle on the inside and out.

you would use a filler block on the lower part, where there is just aluminum.

TD- I knew that you knew your stuff from reading some discussions. I appreciate the advice. That is so much simpler and I can be good to go on the water in a few days. Thanks.

Re: Transom and jackplate question

The filler block has me a bit confused. Do you not think that a 12" piece of angle aluminum (4x4x1/4) would be enough? You are meaning to make the angle longer than that and add blocks under the wooden part of the transom? The transom is just over 8" tall.

Re: Transom and jackplate question

ok, let me see if i can explain this, since you transon only covers the upper part of the transon, you need spacer blocks lower. i used 1 1/2 in aluminum angle, you can get it at home depot. the pieces need to be atleast 16 inches long. 2 outside, 2 inside, each side of motor.

Re: Transom and jackplate question

Gotcha. I will go cut some more 2x6 pieces and get them to soaking in some poly resin right now. I already had the local metal shop order me some 4x4 aluminum, so I will just use that. It may be overkill, but I like that as opposed to underkill. Thanks again TD.
