I am working on a 26? Wellcraft. I wanted to ask if anyone knows what torque is required when installing my transom plate. I have rebuilt the transom assembly and made some minor repairs to the fiberglass surrounding the transom opening. Now I am ready to re install the gamble housing and transom plate and could not find any info on how much torque is required to prevent any leaking. I have new gaskets as well. Oh should I use caulk in addition to the merc transom seal? I was thinking it wouldn't hurt to run a bead of caulk ? between the factory gasket and the transom opening on my boat. Any help would be appreciated What is a good caulk to use if it's advisable to caulk this area

What year, what outdrive, all that information is in the service manuals for your engine and drive, but you give no clue except that you have a "merc tarnsom seal"

Ayuh,...

Generally speaking,...
A solid, sound transom in good shape needs No caukling......

It's got to be 2", to 2,1/4" thick with no more than 1/8" deviations in any directions....

As for the Nuts,+ Bolts,.... I don't measure it, but I'd guess I'm torquring to 45/ 55ft.lbs...

Re: Transom assembly repair and installation

I like to run a very thin smear of clear MARINE silicon on the transom before I put them on... The book spec for the fasteners is 20-25 ft/lb... That's for all Alpha and pre-Alpha drives....

Re: Transom assembly repair and installation

Thank you for the responses and helping me ask a better question. The boat is a 1988 wellcraft antiqua the transom is 2 inches thick. it's powered by a 1988 bravo 1 merc out drive and transom assembly . The engine is a 1990 gm big block 454 fresh water cooled with y pipe exhaust. I don't have a service manual only info i have is what i have been able to get online as far as torque required to mount the transom assembly. I didn't want to over tighten the transom assembly and maybe cause fiberglass/gel coat damage or create a leak path. I had a guy from the local marine repair shop examine the transom for water damage/ rot and other than a small area around the lower transom bolt hole (which he repaired) all is good.
