Re: transom crack

I gotta say one thing, the crew at iboats has to be the most helpful bunch I have ever seen on any forum.
And I have read a lot of threads where people come asking for advice about a soggy transom only to deny it and go off on their own.
You are in the best place for advice on your rebuild.
Good luck!

hey everyone.. how long will it take for poly resin to cure with out wax or gelcoat.. should i put a coat on with wax mixed as a final layer after all my lay up is done.. or will it fully cure on its own after couple days with no wax or sealing it from o2?.. been about 80 and sunny here daily

It really depends on the resin. The resin I get now a days feels like full cure in a few hours at 80 deg. Not really any tack at all.

You could put some wax in it just to be sure though.

Most of the stringers I do involve having some portion of them gelcoated ( which is waxed ). So I dont use wax in my lams.

If your not going to final coat with something..then wax it to be on the safe side.

Re: transom crack

ok thanks yd.. what can i fill voids from air bubbles in the existing glass.. on inside of boat..before i set up any new wood and glass?.. can i use thickened resin that i mix up? with 1/4 chopped and cabosil and poly? how will it sand? i have a couple of spots on corners that have voids from poor bond and air, so i will need to be able to sand what ever i use...can i use off the shelf fiberglass filler like duraglass or similar.. looks like there is something like that from factory used to seal up foam pour holes.. seems like off the shelf would be easier to work with.

also i do plan to paint everything with rustoleum like woody said.. does this count as a final coat or should i wax coat before painting?

...geting closer got about 2 hrs of prep left the full triple clean up..then get those reinforcement cut..gonna screw em right in like opps says, after i seal em up with csm.. then i plan to tab in reinforcements with 1708 like i were doing a transom..then a full sheet to the walls..then csm layer and i picked up some woven roving to match what was in there so im gonna lay a final layer of that everywhere ..

how does my opps plan sound about tabbing in like it were a transom?

Re: transom crack

hey guys opps has given me the plan to move foward, but he has been m-i-a with what i hope is just pc problems and work... i have a few questions i am going to throw on here and see what i get for input.. thanks guys...

i see opps uses glass bubbles for peanut butter... i bought 1/4" chopped strands and cabosil to mix with poly resin.. is this method just as good or should i use glass bubbles? i will need to sand not sure how well my method will sand for corners..

also i have read to bore out motor bolt holes with an allen on drill or bent up nail...and fill with 5200 then redrill bolt holes...what are some thoughts on this method... or is lifecaulk a fine approach if done properly?

Re: transom crack

I see my subscriptions are still acting up and not updating .. grr..

I do my fillets and then start lamming without sanding at all :) .

Here is a trick of the trade for ya ( shssh. .. dont tell anyone )..

Use just cabosil and resin for your fillets .. you can use a spoon or just make your own radius spreader out of one of those yellow spreader jobbies..

After you put your putty on .. and just before its getting gelly like.. lightly brush over it with some resin. This will smooth it out perfectly for lammin ;) .

As far as your bolt holes.. just 5200 the crap out of them :) .. ( if they are though bolted you could resin coat the inside first..then 5200 ).

Re: transom crack

i gotta say... csm is messy stuff... and poly resin stinks up my whole neighborhood....

in the process of waterproofing the reinforcements with csm... i tried to wrap csm up around edges of plywood...did not work out..have to grind some off tomorrow and think of another way to water proof edges... some edges will be tabbed in with 1708 so not concerned with those areas... other spots will have big fillets so no to worried on those... ill figure it out.. poly is nasty stuff..smells like holding your face directly inside of a can of bondo.. its been hot here so i mixed the poly a little light.. seemed to still be pretty tacky after a couple hours...i will let it set up over night and see what it looks like in the am.. wish me luck!
