I have a stacer 420 seahawk, with a usa spec mercury 40hp on it, its recently started to creak from the rear which I traced to transom.

evident when moving motor sidewards by hand, almost sounds like some one tapping a screwdriver on transom, can be felt by hand too.

Motor bolts appear tight.

Not real easy to get it back to dealer, so if it was a simple fix I'd be elated!!!!!

Anyone any ideas?

thanks in advance

Ron

Motor bolts appear tight.
Did you put a Wrench On them,+ Check,..???.........

That's the 1st Place to Start Looking...........
evident when moving motor sidewards by hand,
I wouldn't think it'll be All that Hard to See, What's Up,......

Is this a tiller steered motor or do you have a steering system? If using a single cable steering system, make sure the steering tube is properly greased or disconnect the steering system from motor and then rotate motor to feel if the tapping sound goes away - this isolates problem to motor or steering system. Also make sure motor grease points have been lubricated since old grease stifens and will make some noise under different conditions.

Re: transom creak

Steamboat and Bondo,
thanks for input, much appreciated.

Firstly, it is not obvious, its audible not visible. Bolts are covered in sealant as fitted by dealer (this is a relatively new boat) and appear tight but will try torquing up.

It is a front steer single cable system, so will try to disconnect that and see where that leads.

If all else fails I can go to dealer but means a day off work to tow into town etc. and would be great if I could just grease or tighten things, although its only just had first service.

Thanks

Ron

Re: transom creak

Do you have anything else attached to the outboard or the stern - such as a trim plate or trim tabs?

If the outboard is just sitting on the back of the boat and you aren't moving you don't get the sound- right? The sound comes when you are moving? You may want to check for loose parts on the outboard while the outboard is off, of course.
