Guys,

Am I right in assuming that in most fiberglass hull boats that the wood portion of a Transom will extend from the entire width of the stern?

Correct, in most. The thickness of that wood portion may vary though. For example, there was only a single piece of 3/4" wood on the outsides of the transom on each side, but the area in between the engine stringers used a second 3/4" board on top of it to give 1.5" of wood in the center to allow for the correct tolerances for the transom plate/outdrive/etc. Some may use 1.5" all the way across.

Thanks, mine has an outboard and I was just thinking about replacing the transom at some point so I was getting an idea if it covered the entire width of the stern or just a portion of it. This is an older boat so depending on what I find, I may not even replace it. It just may be time to part it out and look for a new boat.

in an out board situation......this usually the case....

however....not in the case of an I/O.....these can be just slightly wider than the transom plate.
