Transom Engine Mounts

Alright, here's the situation. We dropped the engine in this weekend, and after some adjusting got everything mounted in. However, I did not fasten the rear bolts in, they are just threaded through the bracket holes. I did place the double lock-washer and the fiber washer in between both rear engine brackets and the transom mount.

My issue is that I have 1 metal sleeve (bushing), 1 flat washer, and one nylon lock nut left over for both rear bolts, but I can't remember which goes on first. The Seloc wasn't of much help. I disassembled this thing over a year ago, so I just don't recall the order.

Head up to the Adults only sticky at the top of this forum.
There is a service manual link there where you can download the OEM manuals for your engine and drive. I would assume from your discription it's a Mercruiser of some unknown year and model.
Might have a read of #1 there also.

The nut will replace the old one in the nut holder on the bottom. The holder keeps the nut from turning when you tighten the bolt. The spacer goes on top with the flat washer on top of it then the bolt down thu it all. Torque it to 35 or 40 foot pounds. I put heavy grease on mine to help keep the rust away. You could also use super seal to ward off rust.

So the order goes: flat washer, metal bushing, then lock-nut?

We still don't know what you're working on or what year? As Don said you can get the factory oem manual for free in the Adults only sticky at the top of the main forum page. If your Seloc manual is for Mercruiser 92 thu 00 you can go to section 5 page 4 on the bottom left of page 4 is a good detail of the rear motor mount with the order that all the hardware goes. Good luck on your project.

Well the 1GB+ file was a little to big to be downloading at work, so I was thinking that the Merc V8 motor mounts were the same setup as far as the bolts were concerned. However, now that I have downloaded the manual it is more apparent which order they go in. The engine is a 1976 351/233HP, the order appears to go: bolt head, then metal sleeve, then washer, then the motor mount. Locknut on the bottom of the transom mount. I'll have to pull the rear bolts back out and put the hardware on, but other than that it should be just some minor wiring and linkage items before we get to fire it back up.

This is from a newer model manual, but the parts go together exactly the same.

That picture makes it a lot easier, but still seems like an odd configuration for bolt. I can't think of another area where the spacer would be used to elevate the bolt head aboce the mount. Anyone know what purpose it serves?

The "mount" is a sleeve that is fully surrounded by rubber - to absorb vibrations I would think. The spacer ensures the sleeve inside the rubber is tightened against the transom assembly - allowing the engine to "move" around a little with the rubber taking the flex. It is tall enough that the washer doesn't interfere with the movement. The washer is there to ensure the bolt doesn't "weld itself to the sleeve making removal difficult. That's the way I would understand it at least. ;)
