transom height on a rebuild need help

I get two diffrent storys on transom height. My motor manual say 20 in. but at 20 in. my cavitation plate is 1.75 in. lower than the bottom of the boat. Some say to move transom height up so cavitation plate is level with the bottom of the boat. doing so moves my transom height above johnsons recomendations.<br />What should I set my transom height at and is there a happy medium to all this.

Howdy, kelmic. What to do really depends on your boat . . .the shape of the bottom. . . and the intentions of the original builder. I don't think I have ever seen an outboard boat that wasn't designed to use one of the standard lengths, except ineptly home-made or home-modified boats. <br /><br />Tell us what boat you are putting your motor on. My guess is that our expert friends here will tell you to bolt it on the current transom and go.<br /><br />Good luck.<br />JB

The boat is a 1981 Smoker Craft Alaskan<br />I purchased this boat with a 1982 25 hp evinrude. The boat had been backed into something and bent the transom slightly.<br />I took the boat out with the original motor<br />and got alot of water shoting up in the air <br />form both sides of the motor.I was told this was because the cavitation plate was to low. and I can see on the transom were they had drilled some holes a little higher to shim the motor up. I have sold the original motor because I have a new johnson to put on this boat. but because I took the old transom wood out to replace it I thought I would leave it taller rather than shim up the motor if this was the correct place to have the cavitation plate. any ideas?
