transom height

I purchased a boat 15 ft fishing boat, and had to build a transom form just about nothing. All that was there was a small amount of original transom. I built the transom from scratch so to speak and from the looks of it ,it turned out ok. Question is this. When i mounted the motor on the transom, i knew something wasn't right. The steering cable was at an angle to the motor, which put the steering in a bind. I'm thinking the transom needs to be cut to allow for the motor to set in water the right way. What is the best way to determine how low i should cut the transom down.

Re: transom height

What size shaft motor do you have?

The most common size on a smaller boat (today) is 20"....... on some smaller open fishing boats they used 15" but I image your transom is 20" for a boat with steering.

The distance is measured in a straight vertical line from the top of the transom where the motor mounts to the bottom of the transom (keel).
