I've been trying to figure out what was wrong with my transom

Transom Issue

and while I was going to start drilling test holes, I put my finger inside the drain hole for the splash well, and SH!T my fingers could do a full 360 sweep and it was complete mush inside of there.

Finally pulled the motor off and removed the metal plate protecting the top of the transom, and was preparing to remove the top section of my boat, and well... I can't:eek: it appears to be bonded together were the motor mounts to the transom and its frickin thick!!! I used my angle grinder and cut a section out of the splash well transom area, and its almost 1/2inch thick!!!

I'm currently digging out the old wood, and while clawing at it with my wreaking bar I kept getting splashed in the face with water:redface: so its really bad, going to finish ripping it out and begin measuring pieces to fit in place for the transom.

However seeing that the top section of the boat is not removable can the transom be installed in two peices? Or will this cause more problems

It's probably easier to cut the transom out from the exterior if you can't take off the deck section. It's going to be tough working from the inside especially if there is a splash well above you.

Technically the floor is called the sole and the "cap" section of trailer boats contains the deck. :)

everything and anything is removeable with a chainsaw, sawzall and angle grinder. The easy way is cut the splashwell away.

I cut my old transom out under the splashwell with a chainsaw.

I would not suggest a external transom cut.

Can you explain more as to why you can't split the Deck from the hull? What is the boat type? You may have said and I missed it

Re: Transom is SOL

I had the same issue with removing my cap. What I found it that the factory used a SUPER HARD adhesive where the rear of the splashwell meets the transom. I fought for hours trying to get that bond to break. Much sweat and curse words later I was able to get it broke free with the help of a high lift jack with a 2x4 going length wise under the front edge of the splashwell to provide upward tension then laying under the splashwell with a BFH and a couple different pry tools beating the holy hell out of it. I was not at all concerned about damaging the transom as it was mush, but I didnt want to destroy the splashwell. I didnt. Look at my link below and in one of the first few pics you will see my cap lying on the ground. Look at the white crap on the rear of the splashwell, thats probably what is stopping you too! Let me know if there is anything I can help you with. GOOD luck!

Technically it's a sole, not a deck. Floors are in buildings, soles are in boats. :D

Re: Transom is SOL

Well after my grinder caught fire:eek: I was able to remove the top of the transom where the splash well is, all the rot has been removed I'm waiting for it to stop raining to sand down the remaining bits of wood left over.

Once that is done I will make a pattern of the transom and cut the new ply, coat it in resin and fibreglass then reinstall, one question I have about the new transom is there were 4 bolts that where helping to hold the motor to the transom I'm going to be reusing them however how do I seal these up properly to keep water from ruining my hard work?

I'll post up some pictures once it stop raining with whats left of the splash well as well as material that was pulled out.

Actually, "sole" is a floor in an enclosed interior space, like a salon or galley. If it has a ceiling, walls and door, its a sole. If not, its a deck.:)

Re: Transom is SOL

I don't see a problem with making the transom out of multiple pieces. A good way of doing it is to make the transom from 3 layers of 1/2" or 3/8" ply. Each layer having a seam in a different location than the other two layers. IE, one piece is cut diagonal top right to lower left, the next is top left to lower right, the third is horizontal or vertical off center. Each layer can be installed with epoxy and short screws pull it together until set. Then next layer is done the same.

That should get you around having to cut the boat up to get the cap off, and save all the finish work putting it back together.

If you are worried about strength, add a pair of knee braces under the splashwell aligned with the stringers. It will be solid as a rock.

Re: Transom is SOL

Thanks:cool:

I was hoping to have this issue resolved during my extra long canada day holidays but looks like its going to have to wait until this weekend, have to sand down the remaining bits of wood with 80 grit, fix a small mistake in the transom i made with a chisel:redface:, let that set up and then make my template for the transom then cut up the 3 layers of 1/2inch ply

The best method I've seen for installing fasteners is in an online booklet on the West Systems website.

http://www.westsystem.com/ss/assets/HowTo-Publications/Fiberglass-Boat-Repair-and-Maintenance.pdf

Motor bolts would be covered by the method shown in section 7.2.1
