transom Jack plate go or no go?

i have a 16 foot skeeter with a merc 50 on it now and i am changing it to a evin 90hp and was wondering if it would be better to add a manual jack plate either for stability for the motor or performance, or should i just mount it direct to the transom? thanks

Anytime you even think about a jackplate -- go with it. Its one of those tools that allows other improvements like better props etc. And allows for very easy height changes. Even with a manual plate you can change the height in the water.<br /><br />Of course with a hydraulic plate all you do is push the button.<br /><br />Hummmm...........

Yep. I really like the plates from Bob's Machine. Not only are they good plates but Bob is one of the nicest people you're likely to meet.

Most good plates will bolt in the same location of the original outboard mounting holes, so you shouldnt have to drill new holes to mount the plate.

I wouldn't go with much setback. 3 or 4 inches is plenty. A foot would be a bit much. Consider that those aren't light. Along with the extra weight of the motor, you're adding about 30 lbs more with a jackplate.

Thats why I like Bobs manual. Its convertable from 2 1/2" to 5" offset and weighs only 19 lbs. With a set of 2" spacers you'd have the option of 2 1/2", 5" and 7" setback. <br /><br />Be sure to order the bolt kit when you get the plate. Make life much easier.<br /><br />www.bobsmachine.com

there is rarely a time when a jackplate would not improve performance. <br /><br />usualy you gain in top speed and better fuel economy. <br /><br />if you get the hydralic model, you can get better hole shots too, and then raise it up once under way and get higher top end.<br /><br />plus, just the set back alone is an improvement.
