The transom on my boat was re-built. No factory engine mounting holes are there at all.

Scenario 1:
I buy a jackplate.
Since my motor is a 1967, I doubt any pre-drilled holes would line up with my engine. Do I drill through the jackplate to mount my engine on???

Scenario 2:
I don't buy a jackplate.
Do I drill through the transom to mount my engine???

I am sure the answer(s) is yes. What the hell kind of drill would do that AND how do I figure out what kind of thread on the screws to use. I can't exactly bring the motor to the local bolt shop and do a trial and error game.
