please school me on transom jack plates.<br />reason for, and the effects on engine and boat<br />performance. will be buying new boat 18'to 20'<br />range. multi-species/bass boat. thanks

With jackplates, you can manually or hydraulically change the height of the motor on the transom without removing and reattaching the motor. They also make the adjustment range infinitely variable rather than having just 5 choices.<br /><br />By setting the motor back farther, you can usually run the motor higher than if you bolted it directly on the transom. You can get setbacks between 4" and 12". Getting more of the gearcase out of the water reduces drag and increases speed. But the hole shot can really turn to crap if you go too far.
