transom length question

I own a 13' deep V fiberglass boat which I keep in Michigan. I am not sure of the transom length but my bet is the transom is for a short shaft motor (15 or 16 inches). I am looking to purchase a motor here in Ohio that I can take up with me next time I go to Mich. My question is, is it a safe bet that my 13foot boat would have a short transom? Thanks.

It's a pretty safe bet that your rig is set up for a short shaft(15").

My buddy has a 14' aluminum w/ long shaft 25hp Johnson and his performance has suffered. He needs a jackplate to raise it or trade for a short shaft. I mention this to show that your are correct in making sure prior to getting the wrong size.

Welcome to iboats...and good luck to ya:)

14 foot Aluminum boats most are 15 inch shafts but can also get 20 inch transoms in a lot of models.
To be sure just measure with a tape measure.

Thanks. I cannot measure the transom as the boat is 500 miles away. I would like to purchase a motor here in Ohio and take it up with my next time I go to Michigan. But I think I am getting the idea that my small boat most probably has a short transom.

If the boat is near Lansing I can take my trusty tape measure and get some figures for ya;) Beats driving 500 miles.

I would definetely think your transom is 15", especially if it is an older boat. I think you would be safe buying a 15" shaft motor....but then again it wouldn't be me stuck with a wrong shaft length motor. :D

Can you find the specs for your boat on line somewhere. Wouldn't hurt to do a quick search first.

Re: transom length question

It is a tiller set up. It is a very shallow boat as well.

Hmmm, you say it's a deep V and then you say it's a shallow boat  Mine is only a 14.25 footer, yet it has a 20 inch transom.

Why guess and buy the wrong outboard. Even if you miss out on this outboard there are plenty of others available that will fit your rig correctly if you search one out.
