Transom light

My transom light was missing from my 18ft Searay when I purchased it. It has a Perko 5 degree base with two contacts. I want to replace it with a compatable light pole. My question is how long should it be. CG rules say 1 meter above the side (bow) marker lights but that seems like a lot of pole sticking up above the hull. Does this seem right? My old Chris Craft woodie had a stern pole about 36".

Visible 360* for 2 miles in clear weather. ~basically that equates to mount it so it's higher than the windshield and it's good enough
