I need to replace the steering cable on an old boat. The boat has a transom mount cable . The cables I looked at online only seem to have 1 connector on them as mine has 2( by connector I mean the screw on part that secures the cable to the helm). My old cable has 2 , 1 to connect to the helm and 1 on the other end to connect to the back. Do they come with 2? I've tried to take the old cable apart but those connectors seem to be put on when the cable was made.==1972 14ft Glassmaster, 1978 70 HP Johnson Outboard

Re: Transom Mount Steering Cable

There are different brands of steering. There are basically two styles. Rotary where the helm is round, flat rack is a rack and pinion. Detmar, Morse and Teleflex all make both styles and they all had their own configurations back then. Two of them merged since then (Teleflex/Morse). Finding a replacement cable is sometimes more expensive than a whole new kit. If you have the room for it, the Rotary styles are usually much easier to install because one end of the cable is flexible.

Your motor probably has a tilt tube where the steering cable can attach. You have a bracket bolted to the transom now that it attaches to? Tilt-tube is best. You might need another foot of cable to reach it. You'd also need the link. But it's much better thru the motor.
