I saw a post last night where somebody mentioned a transom mounted trim switch for trailering convenience. Is this something that is ever done for stern drives? Anybody got a picture of their installation along with what was needed to perform it?

This seems like an excellent idea.

I was reading on another forum a while back that you can buy a kit from merc that was real simple, but I dont know about the other drive makers???

mine was factory installed, I could take a peak at it tonight and snap you a pic of the install. I do not know this for a fact but it sounded as if you just had to buy the switch, mount, and plug it into the factory harness. But like I say I dont know for sure.

Yeap I agree with fishbone on that one,, Just where you would feel it needs to be but be sure it's not to low so it won't be in the water,, :D

Ayuh,... All it takes is a 3 position monentary, toggle switch, mounted wherever you'd like...
Then wire it to the trim pump, in a by-pass fashion...
Red power in, green to down, 'n blue to up...

Re: Transom mounted trim switch

I don't have one, but my son does. His was an $80 option and is mounted on the transom just above the swim platform.

When we get the boat home he walks to the back of the boat and lowers the drive, then walks to the trailer tongue and pushes the boat the last 3 feet into the garage. On mine I only have to walk as far as the helm, and reach over the gunnel to hit the switch on the shift/throttle. His is a Cuddy with side windows that block the helm. Mine is a bowrider.

If you can't reach the usual switch from outside the boat, its quite a handy gadget. If you can reach it, I see no advantage. Just more contacts to corrode and potential problems to develop.

Piece of cake.
I did it. I have one on my transom and one on the bow too.
Make sure the one at the transom has some kind of boot on it so its waterproof.
General Schematic attached.

Re: Transom mounted trim switch

I am doing this to my old boat next spring. My switch is not accessible from the side and its a pain to jump in and out of the boat to do it.

I prefer to keep the drive lowered when not in use. And as mentioned its very easy to do. I also have a MerCruiser and will be using a nice purpose built rubber covered transom tilt/trim switch.

I've got two of these that I'm planning on mounting in my splashwell. (one for trim/tilt and one for jackplate)

They are sealed and have a sealed wire whip about 24" long.

They come in two whip styles coiled for steering wheel or straight for transom mounting.

Those are good switches, easy install and waterproof....
I have installed a few of them..

Re: Transom mounted trim switch

They are pretty common from the factory with many boat brands these days many times right next to the transom stereo controls. My Chaparral doesn't have one but was an option the original owner didn't buy. I think if I ever buy another I/O boat, a transom tilt switch will be top on my must have list. Snap in carpet...whatever, mpi engine...whatever, Transom switch...must have. It's the simplist thing but you really notice that you don't have one.
