transom on my larson help

can i cut out a peace of my transom a cross to the hull replace it a new peace glass it in and re-glass part of the old transom up to my hand. will that work and hold my 150 Merck. i would do it all but no way to left the cap or some place to put it . this is my 73 Larson and my first restoration all ready took out all the foam stringers made new ones but did not glass anything and just waiting to see what i am going to do with the transom first . any info will be grate

Two people should be able to move the cap off easily. Putting fresh wood against rotten wood will make the new stuff rot faster. Best to do the whole thing.
