I took all the bolts off to my transom plate. Do I have to take the bell housing off in order to take everything off?

I have a prealpha and no documentation tells me how to take the bell housing off. people refer to pins but I cant seem to figure it out. Anybody please give me some direction to go.

I took all the bolts off of the inner transom and it still wont budge. Please help!

What exactly are you trying to do? Are you trying to remove the transom assembly from the boat? No, bell housing does not have to be removed. Are you trying to remove the bell housing? Then the transom assembly does not have to come off the boat....

Looks like corrosion is your biggest problem. Get the inner treansom plate off first, then knock the lower 2 anode bolt out. Then you may have to pry the transom shield off is someone put sealer on the gasket. A thin putty knife can cut the sealer if that is what's holding the transom shield on.

Re: transom plate must come off!

im trying to get the inner transom plate off. I thought if the bolts were taken off the inner transom plate would loosen up. Not happening.

All of the bolts are off on the inner transom plate. Whats my next step on getting this all apart? I want to redo the fiberglass and the wood in the transom.

Do I wd-40 this and hope for the best or get a prybar? It feels so solid like bolts were still holding it in that I thought the bell housing had to come off.

That unit's been there for about 35 years (minimum) so I'm not surprised it's being difficult to get off. Once you have all 6 nuts off, the inner plate should come straight off. It might be stuck to the glass and need some 'help' to come off. Just be as gentle as possible, That plate will be corroded and will be quite easy to break.... Very gentle prying/teasing up along the edges....

Re: transom plate must come off!

If you was to pull the transom shield off, the inner transom shield would fall into the bilge. The bolts and studs that hold the transom shield on, are also what holds the inner transom plate in place.

WD40 does nothing for the corrosion, people like to think it does, but it just doesn't happen. Corrosion between the bolts ans the aluminum inner shield, the swelled wood in the transom, is all holding things together.

yeah. the transom shield is stuck on there. How much is a new one if I break it? any tips on getting it off? I bought a prybar and a generous size of wd-40. Maybe I should get a bible...

if you are redoing the glass and wood.
I would cut the inner skin of glass back and start to dig the wood out from under the plate until it breaks loose
instead of prying on plate and risking breaking it.....

Are you sure you have all the nuts / bolts off? I believe there should be 8 fasteners - not 6. I would double check that before going any further.

That's actually a good idea! Thanks!

You are infact correct. There are a total of 8 bolts connecting the transom. I got all of them off but it still wont budge. It doesnt even give any indication that all the bolts are off. I used a rubber mallet to maybe shake it up a few times but it still wont even give me a hairline separation.

Re: transom plate must come off!

Chris,
I know there are six around the perimeter and go through the cork gasket, but if I am not mistaken, there are two more above where the steering tube is.

I removed and installed the transom assembly from my dad's old 70's vintage SeaRay a few years ago.

Here's a pic of the inner plate - note the two stainless bolt heads above the steering tube? I believe those bolt into the outer transom assembly: (But it's been long enough now that I could be wrong!)

Here's a couple of pics I took after removing the inner plate:

Either way - it looks like the original poster has removed all the bolts. If you will look at the back of the plate - you will see quite a bit of corrosion where the bolts went through. My best guess is that is where things are binding.
