Transom Plate thickness

Do u guys know if the thickness of this piece is critical. The reason I ask is because my old rotted transom had a 1/2 thickness plywood.

I know the thicker this piece is the more the engine moves forward and less contact the outdrive shaft would make with the engine coupling.

It has to be 1 1/2" of wood plus the hull material +/- 1/16 in thickness. Total is 1 3/4".
It cant very more than a 1/16 from top to bottom, and not low or high in the middle.
I think that was what I read when I did mine. Its been a year since I did mine.

Your may be different. Mine is a glasser.

I pulled what looked like 1/2" peice from mine, and replaced with the same without issue.

Thanks fellas I just wasnt sure. I have a 5/8 that i can use for this small piece. I wasnt sure if it would affect spline contact or if it would be that important. I guess my question is what is that small piece there for then? To center the engine properly?

I don't know the correct thickness....but from what I understand....it is pretty critical.

Hey buddy, I am nearly certain that your transom needs to have a total thickness between 2" and 2.25" - and uniform. That extra plate deal that would go there will make up any small difference that you need to get you to the 2" - 2.25".

Kinda sorta my plan would be to install the transom, then measure the total thickness (including the aluminum transom skin), then build out extra thickness as need be. Know whattamean?

Side note: Those specs would be for a Merc V6 set up in the 89-90 vintage. I "think" your original 140 uses the same but you will want to get your hands on a manual to be sure, eh!

Thanks jasoutside, Im gonna go ahead and measure and get this thing solid. After further research I found out you call this the "transom shim plate".

re-remembering, the 1/2" peice I used didn't leave much for the bolts/studs to tighten up, i'm swear there was about 1/4" of thread when I took it apart and there was barely 1/8" when I installed new, but could also be a few other things, like extra 4200 and new housing gasket I used.

Then again the original peice was squished good and the edges were puffed up a little showing a little more thickness that I think what it was originally. So I'd think a 1/4" or 3/8" would fit better.

Well I'm sure glad I stumbled over this thread. I never replicated that piece at all for my transom and I was literally moments away from tightening everything up permanently, so I saw this just in time.

Not happy that it's gonna add at least a day cause I'll havta cut it out, epoxy it, wait for the epoxy to cure then get back to installing.....

Hehe ruined your day papa. No seriously I was gonna do same thing till I reviewed my pics and saw that plate and realised I had to do some more cutting.

SO heres a pic of what I have. It measures 1 5/8" according to the manual it should be between 2" to 2.25" in other words 2 1/4". So im gonna have to get me 1/2" plywood and I should be right with in specs!
