working on my transom. all the wood is out. I ground out stress cracks and holes to prep for fixing. I have one spot of delamination. Do I grind until the delamination is gone, or have I gone far enough(last pic). I have some clean up to do on the bottom inside of the hull, but other than that, I think I'm ready to make a template and cut the wood for the transom.

Thus brings me to the questions. Do I need to do more prep work? Epoxy or polyester resin? what is the best mat to use? I was thinking of puting a layer of mat on the outside of the transome as well, Is that needed? What is the best wood to use for the transom and stringers? Sorry for all the questions, my head is spinning right now. Thanks in advance,

chad

mount a piece of plywood behind it, and start glassing building it up.

Keep the pics coming. I'll be doing this project this winter and it will be good to see how you go about things. Did you pull up the floor before you started on the transom?

Re: transom progress with pics and questions

congratulations....your not far from done.....

read the hull extension thread...there is pics and procedures of a transom replacement........

ok, wood......ext grade ply..make sure it is dry...build to 2 ins including glass.....

csm is used between the ply. you can also use a wood flour resin mix....(see unintentional stringer job)

once the transom is in place, glass it over and run glass up the sides of the hull to tabb it in.....the hull ext thread will go into more detail.

poly or epoxy is your choice......poly is cheaper, epoxy is stronger, will you need the stregnth?....not in that boat.

if you use poly....when glassing, the matt must go down first (the matt adheres to the substrait better) then cloth over top of the matt.

if you use epoxy....you dont need the matt layer

Re: transom progress with pics and questions(more pics)

thanks for the replies. AK, I pulled the deck out first, then cut out the bad parts of the stringers, then the transom. here are a few more pics. Not alot of progress for the amount of grinding I did, but I will throw them up anyway.

One other question while I'm thinking about it. In the last picture, it shows where the deck will be installed. There will be a lip where the ply is thicker than the glass(not using 3/4 ply, just there for example). Should I level the lip with peanut butter first and then glass, or the other way around? Or something completly different???

thanks,
chad

I spent some time grinding the nonskid off to give a good surface to tab in the floor. I hope that's needed. If not , I wasted alot of time. Still have to do the other side.

Check out the wonderful roven work from factory. All those pockets to catch water, but the stringers are rock solid up front.
