96 skeeter zx180 with yanaha pro v 175. i bought this boat about a year ago and i ahve been tournament fishing on it ever since. the bolts to the jackplate that go into the transom are sucked in a little and when i pick up on the motor there is a little little play in the transom and it has been like this for 6 months. i took it to a local boat shop to have the transom looked at and they said its a little weak but its nothing to worry about. Are they right or do they just not want to mess with it. What should i do here, i have insurance on the boat and i have not checked my policy about rotten transoms. any suggestions?

Re: transom question 96 skeeter zx180

I just bought a 96 zx180 with a 150 on a jack plate and the bolts seem sucked in slightly, too. Skeeter website under history says that boat is all composite construction. Does this rot? I dunno! If you find out let me know, too. Try calling Skeeter.

You should be able to stand on the cav plate and have the transom not move at all, underway there is much much more force than this on the transom so if it won't hold your weight it won't hold the engine either, if it moves a1/4'' or more I think I would be alittle concerned.

I've see this many times and it can be patched by inserting a 1 x 2 x 8" piece of metal on the bolts .

That's a horrible and unsafe idea.

If there's any FLEX in the transom it will be flexing a hell of a lot more at WOT like 5150 said.

WHat you need to do is drill core samples -- 3/8" bit, drill in various locations in the transom and assess the shavings... dry and light, you're all good. wet and dark... new transom...

let us know what you find and we can help over in the dry dock (restoration forum..)

there are various bandaids you can put on to get some more time out of it... but it's not safe and should be fixed properly.

and yes i know this is an old thread, but information like the above should not be in the forums without being corrected... EDIT: bolded for nybo :)

I guess none of you recent responders noticed that this thread is over two years old.

i really dont know what the heck is happening......i responded to one on dockside that was 4 years old......it can up like on the top of the thread list on the forum.......one poster had brought it up out of the archives...

i posted.....and commented that it was an old thread......but it was a good subject so i commented, when the post re appeared with my comment, the previous poster that brought it up was gone.....and it looked like i brought it up....

luckly art saw the post as well and had my back.......but i think some kind of a bot is bringing the posts up from the basement.

it must drive the mods crazy !
