First off I'd like to say thank you for allowing me to join this group! Everyone seems very helpful and nice around here, so cheers.

So I'll start off with my boat, I'm unclear if the year or model, but then make is an anchor industries boat. It's around a 15' used for search and rescue in Vancouver bc. I acquired the boat about 2 months ago and last week I finally put a motor on it. I installed a 75 evinrude 70 hp, and when I took it out last week, I noticed a crack long the bottom inside the Boat. It was letting water in, and upon further inspection I realized that the wood in the transom was all wet, so I'm assuming it's rotten. My question is how do I replace the transom without tearing the deck off the boat? I'm very green to boating, only using open hull designed boats for fishing. I bought this one because I'd like to go to larger lakes, and where i live which is in Prince George bc. There's an abundance of Great Lakes. I've read about sea cast, but it's pretty pricey and there's no dealers around my province. I'm fairly mechanically inclined, and have worked with wood before, but I'm afraid to tackle this project, and to have it done professionally , no one in my little city will do it, due to cost. I'll post up some pictures of the transom tomorrow, but any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and sorry for the winded topic

I have done 2 transoms, both had to split the hull to do. If the transom is bad, expect the floor and stringers to be bad as well. I spent between $1,500-$2,000 USD on each doing it myself. It's not a hard job, just time consuming.

welcome aboard.

quick search, Anchor Industries is the manufacturer, I believe Deckboat and Sterncraft are the brands. what year? what does the paperwork say it is? I could not find anything under 16' for either brand. http://boatspecs.iboats.com/

post pics so we can help. however the best way is usually removing the cap (takes a few hours). note that there is a picture tutorial in the general guidelines forum. here is the link

be advised, long before the transom goes, the stringers have rotted. you may be in for a full gut and restore. you may want to take core samples of the wood by drilling 3/8" diameter holes in the stringers about an inch deep. if the shavings come out like fresh wood, simply use epoxy putty to fill the holes. if the shavings come out dark wet wood, the stringers need to be replaced

you can replace a transom without removing the cap, however in my mind, patching the cap and refinishing it because you cut a chunk out to get to something is much more work (labor and materials) than simply pulling the rub strip and uncapping. sometimes you can clear enough under the gunwals to get it done, however with an OB, the splashwell is usually in the way.

also, in this forum, there are 3 stickies at the top. 3rd sticky is the DIY stuff. read links 14, 2, 3, 4a, and 4b.... in that order for all sorts of boat restoration goodness. here is the link http://forums.iboats.com/forum/boat...r/295740-how-to-s-and-other-great-information

since this boat is only 15', what does the capacity plate say is your max hp?

Thank you for the advice and reply, as for the boat, the tag doesn't have any info other than it's an anchor industries. As for the stringer, I wouldn't know where they'd be located as the only flooring on the boat is the fibreglass covered with a vinyl. Unless it's under that I'm not sure where One would find it. There used to be a motor bolted to the transom, but when I got the boat it wasn't there, so I'm only assuming here that at one point it had at least a 60hp. I'll try and get pictures up later today, when I checked the transom for weakness it didn't appear to be weak. There's no flex to speak of, but when I drilled the new mounting holes for it, the wood was darker and moist

You've come to the right place - lots of good people here. I think you might need one more post til you post pics. I suggest taking/posting a bunch so you can get the best help. Good luck on your project, I'll follow along if you don't mind - always enjoy learning more (and seeing more boat pics!)

It's also easiest to use Photo bucket for pics on here. And yes, the stringers will be under the fiberglass.

Welcome aboard Anchoraways, Glad you could join us. There is tons of helpful folks on these forums and you can get the best suggestions, instructions and ideas from so many of them. Once you post some pictures, then we can see what you're seeing and can offer the best route to take to get you boating safely again.

I am sure this looks and sound massif, but believe me everyone has such feeling at first until they start understanding the procedures and process. So don't feel like you're a lone with your boat project. Everybody started out the same way with their boat projects. So post some pictures and let's get going...

Some folks open a Photo Bucket account and post their picture from there using the URL code to the right of the picture. You simple copy it and paste it here. I personally use picture I take from my computer making sure I shoot the picture size smaller then a few 100 kb size. I think if you keep the size under 400 kbs it will load direct. Try it and see. Here are some pics, I checked the transom by banging around for soft spots and noise changes, I didn't feel or hear anything, but I'm sure that probably means nothing
