Hello everyone,

I have a 1989 sunbird spl155 where the transom is solid. Right now I have a 1977 70 hp johnson and a CMC PT-130 on it with no problems those two give me a combined weight of 250lbs, is very solid. I just purchased a 2008 75 hp mercury optimax, that weighs in at 375. That is another 125 lbs. The boat is rated for a 70 hp. but does not give any weight limits on the transom. I am wondering if I need to reinforce the transom, or is this sufficient?

If I do, please advise me as to the best(cost effective) way to do this.

the motor arrives in two weeks and I would like to be ready, if I need to do anything

Thanks.

Re: transom reinforcement needed?

How thick is the transom? My guess is if its 1.5" or thicker, its OK. Less than that and the nearly 400lbs may be stressing it.
