Re: transom repair...from the outside??

This may sound dumb, but bear with me. I've been reading many resto threads lately. I always read cracks, accidental cuts, holes in the hull, gel coat, its all fixable. So I wonder, when a transom repair is necessary, why has nobody ever repaired it by cutting the outside skin? Pl it to the inner skin, and maybe even pl the outer skin back on and tab it back together. If this could be done and work seems to me in some situations and with some boat designs it could make things much easier if you were willing to deal with a little paint variation from touching it up.

I'm more or less just wondering why this can't be done, or is not ever the chosen method. On my old rotten boat this would eliminate removing the cap. I'm terrified of getting a distorted hull. And on stern drives you could leave the motor in.

There was/is a thread over on THT about a Fountain 31 that had transom rot and it was repaired from the outside (I cannot seem to find it for some reason :noidea: ). So, yes, 'somebody' has done it. It is fairly common with issues strictly related to the transom. As mentioned, the lamination skill needs to be at a high level in order to have something with integrity that will last.

If it is more than just the transom, you are far better off to go from the inside (watch your head though).

I know how I'm gonna do my boat. It'll be done from the inside with cap on. I'm knee deep in it already. I'm interested in finding stuff out about my fathers bay liner. The windshield gap has grown considerably in 3 years. When he got it he carpeted a piece of painted plywood and tacked it to his deck. He pays little mind to me when I tell him I think he has bigger problems. I was just wondering if there were a less invasive repair to make it easier to talk him into tearing into it. Apparently it all sucks though. Lol. I know there is seacast but its pricey.
