transom repair, keep same gelcoat shell?

when i repair and replace the wood in my transom , can i keep the same gel coat sheel and just re-resin it back to the wood.. i reall dont wanna chop it out cause its in such good condition.........<br /><br />mikey

I would just make sure all the voids get filled and use epoxy. You'll never have to worry about it again.

That's how I did mine. It turned out great (perfect, actually) but it was a ton of work to remove all of the old wood without damaging the skin. It wasn't all rotten and a lot of it needed hours of careful work with a chisel to get out. Make sure that you use lots of resin and clamp it as well as possible. I used ready-rod (waxed for removal) through every hole the transom had but I had lots of holes already for trim tabs and the like.

I would get the wood out. There are instructions on how to do this at www.mfgboats.com, enter and look at the "How To" links on the left hand side.
