I have a 17" center console . I already replaced the floor and the stringers built a t-top and leaning post, rebuilt the motor and now the transome is done! should have known. I got the whole cap off and all the mulch out of the transome. I saw the sea cast stuff but was wondering which is cheaper ,doing like original or with sea cast. its an 87 boat and lasted this long . if it las another 23 years ,thats good for me! I want to paint it wile its apart and I have to get the t top and leaning post powdercoated so cheaper is betterPICT0072.jpgPICT0073.jpg

I agree with Bondo. I am working on my project now and at one point considered Seacast or Nida. Don't want to spend that kind of money so I have settled on the original...plywood. It lasted 20 years, so another 20 should get me through. I certainly don't need a transom that will outlast the rest of the boat...or me.

Since you already have the cap off, I'd stick with plywood. A properly sealed plywood transom will most likely outlast your interest in this particular boat.

Demon,

Yeah "wood is good", but you live in Florida where most of the pourable transom compounds are made. I'd give NIDA core pourable ceramic transom compound a serious looking at. It is half the price of Seacast and real easy to work with. Google NIDA core products for their info. They have great tech support, and are very helpful.

I just heard of this product and it may be cheaper then nida bond or seacast. I have no experience or feedback but it might be worth looking up ARJAY POURABLE TRANSOM COMPOUND

PICT0352.jpgPICT0322.jpgPICT0330.jpgPICT0315.jpgPICT0331.jpghere are some pics of the floor and stringer project. this is my first boat, but I am very capable of fixing any thing. the way the back of the boat is built, it is pretty strong . the fiberglass cracked just a little which made the motor move a lot .its not that I didnt figure the wood back there was bad, It just has a decent design to make the transom strong any way.it has a inner layer of fiberglass so you could not see it.
Ill check that other stuff out
thanks

Do you recommend sealing with epoxy or using quality outdoor paint primer and latex exterior paint?

This is a glass boat so it should be glassed in. Not being a glass guy I don't know the recommended material layout schedule. I do believe it would his choice whether to use polyester or epoxy.

Not any cheaper than nidabond, and basically the same stuff. The arjay stuff you cannot buy from the manufacturer, you have to order through a dealer. Nida-bond you can order off there website, and it is shipped to your door.

Cheapest strongest way now is PT ply with poly resin and glass.
Once you pop the cap it doesn't make sense to pour the transom any longer.
You would have to build a rear dam to pour it into, then you will still have to glass it to the hull.
Think wood.

Re: transom repair, whats the cheapest way out

Has anyone used the nida-core pour in transom??? I have a rotten transom and all I did was cut enough glass out of the way to dig out all the plywood in the transom. Its a little boat 4.5 feet wide.

Re: transom repair, whats the cheapest way out

Seacast is made here in New Smyrna so you could save on shipping since your not to far.
If you check their website they have a calculator to figure out how much you need and cost.
Still it's gonna be more than ply.

If you use ply use two pieces of 3/4" and laminate them together. Use either Marine Grade or Exterior ply. (Don't use PT only two people on here and nowhere else in the world does anybody but them think that's the way to go (Sorry guys but you know it's true)).

Use Poly resin (unwaxed) it's what your boat is made of and there really is no real benefit to using epoxy to glass your transom in.

There are lots of threads on here about installing a new transom.

Re: transom repair, whats the cheapest way out

I see that the Nida is more money than wood and glass....but what about the labor to rip out the old glass and wood and re glass everything? I would think if the glass skins are in good shape, digging out the transom and pouring it would end up the same or less.... Time = Money
