Re: Transom Repair

I Did Pay $120 Per 5 Gallon Pail But To Me The Shipping Was A Little Higher Than What I Think It Should Have Been. I Ordered Five Buckets On Nida Bond The Total Came To 599.60 Or Somewhere Around There But The Shipping Was 200.00 To Have It Shipped. When I Caluclated The Shipping Cost And The Cost Of The Nidabond It Still Came Out About 500 Less Than The Seacast. The Catilyst Was Purchased At A Local Fiber Glass Supplier And It Was 44.00 For A Gallon Not That I Will Need That Much But It Was Cheaper Than Buying 2 Quarts Of The Catilyst. From What They Had Told Me That I Would Only Need 5 Pails Of The Nidabond And When I Did The Calucaltions Of Seacast I Was Going To Need 6 Pails Of The Seacast. I Am Guessing That Because The Nidabond Is Much Thinner It Is Easier To Get It Out Of Bucket And Not Waste As Much As I Would Have With Seacast. I Will Say The Shipping Was Very Quick. From The Day I Placed The Order It Only Took Five Days For The Nidabond To Arrive

Re: Transom Repair

I Have Been Working On Getting The Transom Out Of The Boat For The Past Few Days. Doing It The Same Was As You Would Do For Seacast With The Paddle Bits And Chisels. I Had Some Really Hard Areas To Get Out And Some Very Easy Areas To Get Out So Far. It Seems That From The Centerline To The Left Side Of The Transom Was Completely Rotted And The Bit Has Alomost Gone Staight Down But On The Right Side Of The Transom It Has Been Solid As A Rock. I Found Out Why The Transom Rotted On The Left Side. The Inner Wall The Covers The Transom That Should Be Figerglass Is Just A Very Heavy Layer Of Gelcoat Only And There Was A Couple Of Small Holes Of That Side Toward The Bottom Of The Boat. I Am About Half Way Through Getting The Transom Out Of The Boat. I Am Hoping The Get All Of It Out By The End Of The Day Saturday And Possibly Do The Pour On Sunday.

Re: Transom Repair

Well Did Not Get All Of The Wood Out This Weekend As I Hoped To Do. It Took Alot Longer To Get The Wood Out Of The Right Side Of The Transom Since None Of That Was Rotten. Had Thought About Using A Chainsaw To Get It Out With But My Transom Is So Deep That I Would Have Need A Saw That The Blade Would Have Needed To Be About 30 Inches Long. As Of Now About 90 Percent Of The Transom Is Out. I Also Have To Do Some Fiberglass Patching On The Inner Liner Of The Transom Where I Went Through With The Paddle Bits. It Happened In About 7 Places. I Have To Fix Those Areas So That The Nidabond Will Not Come Out Of The Holes. I Will Be Working On That This Week And Have It Ready To Pour In On Saturday If The Weather Holds Out.

When I Took Out The Brass Drain Tubes On The Transom I Had To Destroy On End Of Them To Get Them Out So I Will Have To By New Ones Which I Can Get At Boaters World For About $ 6.00 Each. How Do I Flare The Other Side Of The Tube After I Put It Back In The Transom? Should I Put Those In Before I Do The Pour And Let The Nidabond Form Around Them To Seal The Areas Or Should I Put Them In After The Pour And Drill Out The Holes After The The Nidabond Is Dry? I Am Thinking That It Might Be Better To Put Them Before The Pour.

I Also Have A Few Pictures Of Removal Of The Transom Core That I Will Put On Later.

I would try to put them in first, that way they get sealed perfectly in place, even if you don't crimp them over until after the transom has cured.
They may facilitate plugging the existing holes as well.

How do you plan to keep the transom walls from spreading during the pour?

Re: Transom Repair

To Keep The Transom Walls From Opening I Will Be Doing Like The Seacast Way By Putting The Bolts Back Trough The Holes Where The Motor Bolts To The Engine. I Will Be Coating Them With Some Grease Or Mold Removal Wax So The I Can Get Them Out When It Is All Dry. I WILL ALSO BE PUTTING IN A COUPLE OF SPACER BLOCKS IN THE TRANSOM SO THAT I CAN GET THE THICKNESS RIGHT WHEN I TIGHTEN UP THE BOLTS.

Is There A Special Tool Needed To Crimp The End Of The Brass Drain Tube. The Tube That Goes Through The Transom So That Water Can Get Out Of The Splashwell?

Re: Transom Repair

I Used Paddle Bits With 2 Long 12 Inch Extensions And One 6 Inch Extention, A 1 1/4 Pipe To Drive Down Into Areas That I Could Not Get With The Paddle Bits, Also A Piece Of 3/4 Inch Piece Of Eletrical Conduit That Was Flattened Down On One End To Make A Long Scraper. I Had To Sharpen The Paddle Bits Quite A Few Times On A Grinder As I Would Burn Them Up In Areas On The Transom That Was Not Rotten.

Re: Transom Repair

Sorry guys new to the site but not to boating i have been in this business for over 10yrs and i own my own business and do a ton of Glass repair including stringers and transoms and to be honest i have never seen any of the above listed stuff in any WELCRAFT boats and i have put in numerous transoms in all makes and models and the only way to fix the transom is to cut out the existing glass and wood and put new back in. Do not waste your time and hard earned money on the quick fix products. If the transom is roted then the moisture is still trapped between the glass layers and it needs to be removed

Eaves, you probably have the wrong idea on how is the product use. All the wood has to be removed just like you would. However, it is best to keep all the glass intact rather than take the inside transom wall. Then all it has to be done is pour the mix in the woodless transom and you have a rot proof transom. The real hard part in this process is removing the wood. In my case, the inside glass of my boat is ruined so I will cut it and replace the transom with wood then put new glass. I might go the same route of the OP for the stringers.

Re: Transom Repair

Does Fiberglass Resin Go Bad? I Patched The Holes On The Inside Of The Transom With Fiberglass And Polyester Resin. I Did The Repairs On Thursday Afternoon And As Of Today At 12:30 It Is Still Not Dry. It Is 2 Days Later. When I Mixed The Resin I Mixed A Little Bit More Hardener Than I Needed To So It Would Set Up Quicker And That Is Not The Case. I Have Had The Resin Since About May Of 2008 When I Was Doing Some Glass Work Of The Floor Of The Boat Where I Had To Cut It And Replace The Gas Tank. Now I Think I Have To Pull Glass Patches Out And Cut New Glass And Reglass The Holes That I Had. Is It Possible The Just Coat Over The Areas With A Reworked Amount Of Resin Or Should I Pull The Other Glass Patches Off Clean The Area With Something And Reglass Using A New Resin?

Re: Transom Repair

Well I Removed The Fiberglass Patches That I Did On The Inner Liner Of The Transom And Bought Some New Resin And Redid The Patches And Everything Worked Out Fine This Time. I Still Dont Know What Happened Before As It Would Not Dry At All. I Was Not Able To Pour The Nidabond This Past Weekend Because Of All The Rain We Had For Sat. And Sun. We Finally Had A Little Break Sunday And I Thought About Doing It Then But The Rain Came Back And It Rained All Day Monday. I Am Planning On Pouring The Nidabond This Coming Weekend And They Are Saying It Is Supposed To Be Very Nice This Weekend.

Re: Transom Repair

We Poured The Transom Today And It Went Very Good. I Will Post Some Pictures Later. I Was Surprised How Easy It Was To Pour. The Nidabond Was A Fairly Thin Compund. It Took A Total Of About 1 1/2 Hours To Pour And Complete. No Need To Hit The Transom With A Rubber Mallet Like With Seacast.

THIS IS A PICTURE OF THE BUCKET OF NIDA CORE

ATT00100.jpg
[/IMG]

THIS IS THE MEKP CATILYST. JUST MIX 12 OUNCES PER 5 GALLON BUCKET AND POUR
ATT00076.jpg
[/IMG]

WE MIXED EACH BUCKET ABOUT FIVE MINUTES

ATT00137-1.jpg
[/IMG]

TO MAKE IT EASIER TO POUR INTO THE TRANSOM WE POURED THE MIXTURE INTO A 3 GALLON MOP TYPE BUCKET THAT HAD A SMALL SPOUT ON THE END OF IT, WAS VERY EASY TO POUR. IT WAS SO THIN THAT IT WAS SELF LEVELING

Re: Transom Repair

The Nida Core mix don't get or need any chopped fiberglass fill? Does it have anything in it for added strength or is it just resin?

Re: Transom Repair

It Does Not Need Anything With It. It Is A Resin With Ceramic Microphosic Pheres. The Pheres Is What Gives It Its Strength
